Moinho da Cascata

Amazing location with an amazing view of western most coast of Europe. We sat on the veranda and watched the sunset over the ocean every night. The house is a historic mill built in 1740.

They’ve done a good job updating this almost 300 year old building but the sinks and shower didn’t drain well and everything kind of just stayed damp.

Space limitations understandably limited the availability of larger kitchen appliances. A/C worked fine, though.

Nice linens. Kitchen had enough to prepare basic meals by oven or stove top kettles coffee maker. Nice sink for washing. The fridge was only under counter so if you plan a lot of groceries make note. There is no freezer for frozen pizza etc. hot water in shower was nice and hot. Sweeping views of ocean just magical. Proximity to waterfall very nice. You can not see waterfall from front porch but amazing views of entire area. There was a bedroom with a door that closed downstairs for privacy plus a double bed and two twin singles. Room enough for 6. Nice large kitchen table to eat meals and two living room sitting areas to spread out one upstairs and one down. Left us recommendations for hikes and answered questions easily and quickly. Brought extra blankets for us as we were cold with drafty house and no heat (but we are from tropical destination so most people would not be cold). We were so grateful for extra blankets especially since our luggage didn’t make it on flight.

Similar to historic properties not tightly sealed (rain comes in through bottom of front door for example) so on windy nights can hear wind whizzing and for guests to know the upstairs window facing the sea is loose. We spent until 3am thinking shutters were banging on the house the kids couldn’t sleep until I realized it was the actual window. Finally propped up something against the window and the sound stopped. So wanted to let everyone know to try that so you don’t have a sleepless night with kids crying. Also the upstairs catwalk has slats in between floor boards and railings far apart. It’s not really safe for small kids. My kids 12 and 14 even kept tripping and hurting themselves. Bring night lights to light up those stairs as even with the lights on you can’t really see that catwalk and it’s dangerous for kids. They can fall through the slats to the downstairs. Bring something to block the stairs if you have small kids.

This was such a magical place to stay. I think the location is unbeatable. The home is a bit rustic, but that’s part of the charm.

The location of the house was amazing. The small coastal town was like a dream. The detail and decoration throughout made it feel homey. There is even remains of the old mill in the home. Having a personal view of the waterfall was unlike no other. Please know that you do not get the view of the sea and the waterfall both from the veranda. BUT you can walk through the yard or go to the trail behind the house to get closer. The yard cows were an added bonus! The view of sunset from the veranda were stunning. It took little time to learn the layout of the island and how best to adventure around it. In the small town around the house there is a laundry facility (beside the hostel) that is a short walk to the coast to grab a beer while you wait! We took their advice on a trip to Corvo which turned out to be a game winner! Best adventure ever! Heads up! There are these birds on the island called Corey's Shearwaters. This is a bird straight out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie that you hear at night. They will come to the window with a very odd sound.

I wish that we had known before how cold the house would be. It is an old stone house, we knew that. The heaters were not enough to keep the home warm. There was a wood stove in the home, unfortunately due to the weather getting fire to burn in it was almost impossible. There is a Reddit thread about how the moisture in the environment creates an issue with the wood stove. Wish we had read that thread beforehand. Also there was not a sign marking the house as private property so we were constantly having to step outside to ask people to leave the property and guide them to the public path to see the waterfall. This happened during breakfast, lunch and dinner each day that we were there. We were told by the locals that it was unusually cold for May.

Lokalizacji nie zapomnę do końca życia. Każdy z nas otworzył buzię z wrażenia jak zaparkowaliśmy auto. Można w zasadzie pobierać opłaty od przechodniów za dostęp do prywatnego tarasu widokowego na wodospad :) Jest chyba lepiej niż na zdjęciach i ciężko będzie przebić to położenie podczas kolejnych wakacji. Bardzo sprawnie działała klimatyzacja, która pomogła nam ogrzać wnętrze, co nie jest oczywiste na Azorach.

Dość podstawowe wyposażenie kuchni i brak np. kieliszków do wina...w takim miejscu oczywiście wino pite ze zwykłej szklanki smakuje świetnie, ale fajne byłoby zadbać o takie szczegóły. Przydałby się też dach nad zewnętrznym stolikiem. Przy drobnym deszczu miło tam posiedzieć i obserwować zachód słońca.

תשתית החשמל גרועה ביותר, הוא כל הזמן נופל וצריך לצאת לארון החשמל שבכביש כדי להרים את הפקק. יש אח לחימום אך אין זכוכית בדלת ואין עצים, סתם קישוט. הקשר עם המשכיר גרוע, הוא לא זמין ולא עזר לנו. אני מאוכזבת ולא ממליצה לעבוד איתו, יש מקומות יפים אחרים.

Die Lage ist einfach grandios und unbeschreiblich. Die Vermieter waren sehr nett, hilfsbereit und haben immer schnell geantwortet.

Ausstattung und Sauberkeit ließen ein wenig zu wünschen übrig.
