"Amazing place to rest and spend in Atitlan"

9.0

The place is amazing, so beautifully decorated. Every spot is so delicate welcoming you to rest and enjoy. The staff is great, everyone always ready to help and welcome you

The continental breakfast included was quite poor, comparing the quality of food given in the restaurants. It was just fruit, bread and one tmarmalade. It should have included some pastries, different type of jams, etc. Other options were available to purchase.

"It's not a luxury Relais Chateaux experience - lake and volcano views ubstructed by trees"

5.0

We stayed in the Santa Clara suite; the design and details were beautiful. Everything else fell short. It started with our drive from Antigua. The shortest fastest route is via route 1 to route 11, and then right onto the dirt road near Agua Escondida, which we took. The only problem was that the road was closed because "it is impassable" according to locals at the intersection. This re-route, and back track, added 45 minutes to our trip. One would think that a Relais Chateaux would alert their guests, most of which likely come from Antigua, that the fastest route is not available. Not a luxury experience... When we finally got to the hotel, nobody was at the gate, so we had to call the hotel and wait for them to call someone to come to open the gate.,.. Not a luxury experience... At check in, I asked for 2 keys and they said they don't do that; only 1 key per room. Later that day, we were up at the Villa hot tub, which is over a 5 min walk up a steep driveway. I left back to the room before my wife, forgetting she had the key, and ended up at our room keyless, so I had to walk back to the reception, and they still wouldn't give me a 2nd key. I had to wait for someone to come back to my room to let me in. Not a luxury experience.

Probably the biggest disappointment was the view. One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was because of the views of the volcanoes across the lake, as shown in some of the website photos. Unfortunately, the large trees in front of the hotel have now grown so much that the volcanoes are now mostly obstructed from Santa Clara. I've attached a photo from our room and from the website... The cat that was loudly meowing at dinner, was later somewhere near our room, keeping us awake from 11:30p to past midnight. I mentioned this to the front desk and they said it's not their cat. Not a luxury experience. We woke up on Saturday to a sewage smell on our terrace, wafting from the main building. Not a luxury experience... Later, when we were visiting San Pedro, we massaged the hotel for a lunch recommendation, and they say there are too many restaurants to make a recommendation. I said that's exactly why we need a recommendation. No response. Not a luxury experience... When we checked in on Friday, we booked a 90 min massage for Saturday at 6:30p, and a hike for Sunday at 8am. They said they would confirm. We realized Saturday at 1pm, a day later, that we hadn't received a confirmation, so we messaged the front desk and they said they would reach out to confirm. They hadn't reached out a day later? Not a luxury experience.... Fortunately they were able to confirm, so we asked for a dinner reservation at the hotel's lake restaurant for 8:30p. "Sorry, the restaurant closes at 9pm" I said, we need to eat and the massage ends at 8pm, and we'll get there as soon as we can. "OK, but remember the restaurant closes at 9pm". Not a luxury experience.... The hiking guide spoke no English. In fact, most of the staff spoke only limited English. One would expect that a Relais Chateaux, charging $700/night, with most of the guests being international, would have competent English speaking staff.

"checked out at 7:30 am. That explains something"

3.0

Can’t think of it. Overall I cannot recall any experience that was particularly positive about this place. I was hoping to have paid for exceptional stay and wouldn’t have minded about it but at the end all I could think about how everything was overpriced for the value

Service, room hygiene, food were overly priced for the true value.

"Lovely resort with gorgeous views"

The hotel was located in a gorgeous setting. The views of the lake were spectacular. We enjoyed the food both at breakfast and dinner. The gardens and flowers were beautiful. The staff were very nice and helpful. I enjoyed the very relaxing massage. Staying at Casa Palopo was just perfect.

"Gorgeous location and lovely accommodation on the lake"

8.0

Very beautiful location with charming decor. Staff was friendly. Of the options in the lake area, it’s definitely one of the nicest and most beautiful accommodations!

Since this is marketed as 3 stars, I actually don’t have any issues with the hotel given the rating as I feel this is accurate. However, given it’s a Relais & Chateau property, there are a couple of items I’d flag to get it up to par with other R&C properties I’ve stayed at - Staff at concierge desk was not very helpful when inquiring about booking activities/excursions. The property could use some updates and the rooms could be more comfortable with some simple upgrades (for example, an easy upgrade would be to provide plush towels instead of thin and old ones). The restaurant could use more options, and the quality could be improved.

"A memory for your lifetime"

9.0

Location and staff. Couldn’t be better

We stayed 5 nights and the food was good but it is not varied. A soup, a starter a main and a pudding of the day would be a good addition to the not inexpensive menu

"Warming luxury"

10.0

Everything about the property was stunning, high end & warming. Both the property, the rooms, the restaurants were amazing and comfortable. The service was impeccable. My husband and I weee there for our honeymoon. We toured the lake on a boat but were so glad we booked this place because the location was private and on the quieter side.

If I had to point out one thing is that they promote a particular pool a lot as there are two but it seems to be closed off often from prior reviews and was closed our first day there to us. On the way to the lake I got really naseous with a headache from The altitude and all the turns around the mountains (not the hotels fault but thought I’d mention to those traveling to the lake)
