Zao Kokusai Hotel

Great location for autumn foliage in late October. The hotel is right beside the ropeway gondola that goes up to the top of the mountain with beautiful views. There was an English speaking staff. It was very helpful. The free shuttle bus from the train station was a nice benefit. The rooms and on baths had beautiful views of mountain scenery and a stream.

The hotel itself is great and comfortable, but there was almost nowhere to eat in Zao Onsen in mid October. Almost all the shops in town were closed for the season, including most of the restaurants. The restaurants that were recommended were closed on Wednesday when we were there. We did not want the large meal served by the hotel restaurant, so ended up eating chunk food from the convenience stores for our meals. I would advise signing up for the meal plan with the hotel, despite its cost, if you are an off-season to the snow season. That would provide you a comfortable place to eat with what I’m sure is good food.

Although we booked a large suite, it was much bigger and more spacious than expected, especially for a Japanese ryokan. The outdoor onsen was a great and unique experience. The location is not within walking distance of major tourist attractions, but that’s probably to be expected since the ryokan mainly hosts Japanese guests who come to relax.

The location requires a car, which may be less convenient for some travelers.

お部屋がとてもよかったです。 グレードを上げたので少し値段は上がりましたが、上がっただけの良さはありました。 お部屋もホテル全体も清潔に保たれていて気持ちよく過ごす事が出来ました。

ネットフリックスが見れてよかったのですが、途中から見れなくなってしまい、残念でした。 あと、お風呂もとてもよかったのですが、熱すぎて長湯出来なかったのが残念でした。
