Hars Garden Sumba

Everything! It was clean, and the bathroom was spacious! So cool how Hars is building everything himself on his property. The view of the mountains is just… wow! I stayed for two nights, but I easily could’ve stayed longer. Breakfast was also delicious, with fresh fruit from the garden! The fact that there’s no air conditioning might take some getting used to, but I slept really well — the breeze flows nicely through the room thanks to the way it’s built. I’m very curious to see how things will look in a few years with all the plans Hars still has. It’s hard to imagine this place becoming anything but a hidden gem!

We stayed at Hars Garden in Sumba and had a truly unforgettable experience. Hars, the owner, picked us up from the airport and even took us to the beach to watch the sunset, where we had a simple but lovely meal (pick up and beach tour we paid 350k IDR). Hars himself looks like he walked straight out of a National Geographic documentary—completely in tune with nature, just like his accommodation. We arrived after sunset in the dark, and due to heavy rain, the solar panels were damaged. We had about 1.5 hours of electricity from a generator before everything went off—including the water pump for the shower. Staying here is a real adventure. You sleep almost outdoors in charming wooden huts with many little gaps where insects can easily find their way in. Hars even had to save us from a big spider that first night! The hut had everything we needed, except for a fan, which would have been nice as it was quite warm. One of the absolute highlights is the night sky—you can see the Milky Way clearly because there’s no light pollution. And waking up in the morning was magical: the view stretches out over the mountains all the way to the horizon. Breakfast was absolutely incredible—Hars puts so much effort into it and explains everything about the property and the island. He can also help you arrange a driver if you want to continue exploring Sumba. Highlights: everything eco, surrounded by pure nature, Hars himself, the amazing breakfast, the breathtaking view.

Downsides: the mosquito net was a bit small, and there was no fan. Important to know: when you book here, eco really means eco—there’s no air-conditioning, no WiFi, and sometimes no electricity. But in exchange, you get the real, untouched beauty of Sumba.

We had an amazing stay at Har's place. The location is nothing short of dreamy, with amazing views of the valley hills just in front. Har has constructed all the houses (I recall around 3-4 now) by himself, you can check on his IG for more detail on how he built them! All of them are really comfortable and unique, following the local architecture, blending with nature and each of them providing a different experience. Har is an expert and consultant on organic farming and produces his own veggies that he uses to cook the most fantastic breakfasts you will ever have, super yummy and different everyday, with the plus of overviewing the views directly from your stay. Don't forget also to order dinner from him, much better than eating anywhere else, every meal was amazing. Har always went the extra mile to make us feel comfortable, showed as around his plantation (he plants to reforest the area with a thousand fruit trees!) and the best: he gave us the best tips on the island, pointing spots that are not even in Google Maps and ready to explore. Think on pristine waterfalls, empty beaches, beautiful local villages, hills, etc. Please visit Har and Sumba before it gets ruined by the evils of mass tourism, and please visit with an open mind, it's raw, wild, authentic, and that's why is missing facilities compared with other destinations, but that what make it so unique and special. Thanks so much Har, we cannot wait to visit you again, cannot wait to see your new creations, houses, farm and forest!

Really nothing, everything was fantastic, as mentioned above, Sumba is still raw, wild, authentic, and that's why is missing facilities compared with other destinations, but that what make it so unique and special. Har has a few lovely dogs that are playing around, all well behaved, but take that into consideration in case you are not fond of cute dogs craving for some petting ;)

Hars Garden is located on the beautiful hills of east Sumba. The view is spectacular. Hars is an amazing host who likes to share his ideas of a true ecological lifestyle, which includes his fabulous garden, that also provides fruits and veggies for your brekkie. Don't be alarmed by the lack of electric air-condition, there's a breeze on the hills that keeps your cute house cool at night. We stayed three nights at Hars Garden and were very well taken care of. Hars knowledge about the surroundings and east Sumba is a source not to disregard.
