Unzen Iwaki Ryokan

Great location

Onsen waters were too hot for me.

Location was excellent I could see the steam from the Jigoku from my room, which was an excellent sight to wake up to. The beds and rooms were clean, and the two baths were excellent.

The complimentary razor was very nice, but it didn't come included with any shaving gel or cream, so unless you brought your own, it was unusable. The times for breakfast were also early and somewhat unflexible. I also would have preferred an option for a softer pillow. There were also a few personal belongings left behind in the room from a previous guest, but in an out of the way place that could easily be missed

The ryokan is very conveniently placed, right in the middle of the town, next to the main attraction.

There are two public baths in the building, one outdoors and the other indoors. The outdoor one is very small: 4 showers and the bathtub could accommodate maybe 8 people at a time. The indoor one is larger, but it is a bog standard rectangular bathtub and it was plainly boring. My room was weirdly arranged, with the toilet in one corner and the washbasin in the other, so you had to cross the entire bedroom to wash your hands.

Outdoor onsen was closed due to weather but the inside one was nice. Good location and parking options.

Bathroom can be cold in winter night

Very central to the town, just a minute away from the famous “hells”. Food looks spectacular. Comfortable room. View of next door’s shrine.

Younger staff could not make recommendations on what to drink with the meal.

History behind and location is right in the middle of town. Clean ,good service and great meal

I really liked the authenticity of the place, it looks like we are transported back in time maybe 50 years ago during the boom of Japan economy. The hotel could use a little refreshing of the interior decoration but it is also part of its charm.

I imagine it could be a little cold in winter but I went there in may so did not suffer from this.
