"Peaceful retreat"

7.0

I spent a few days here with my two dogs. The location of the retreat was beautiful, with a stream running down one side of the camp area. It was secure enough to let my dogs roam freely, although I did have to use some chairs to block the entrance and a gap in the undergrowth on one side. It would be useful to have something available to block the entrance gateway. There was a separate parking area joined to a large pond, next to the retreat site, and it was only a very short walk between the car and the retreat, which has a stone path for most of the way. The ground conditions were fine when I visited, and I did not need wellies, although this was following quite a long, dry spell. The cabin is very nice inside, with a large, comfy (though a bit creaky) bed, a small amount of storage places next to the bed, a stand at the end of the bed and a glass-topped table with 2 chairs. There is no electricity in the cabin, but there are several battery operated lights. Don't forget to bring a powerbank to charge your phone etc! Not that you'll need to use your phone much as there's no signal at the camp area, but I was able to get reception by walking up the farm track to the site entrance (but I definitely see this as a benefit!). It was quite dark around at night, especially as the battery powered lights were quite dim and one had run out of batteries, but I had brought a head torch, so it wasn't a big issue. The solar powered lights outside were sufficiently bright. The camp area also has a separate, covered cooking and eating area with a sink with running water and all the cooking utensils you could need, a gas barbecue, and a picnic table. There is also a fire pit next to that area. Towards the rear of the site is an eco toilet, but there are also standard toilets in the shower block on the main campsite a short walk away.

There is a 'woodland walk' next to the camp area, but unfortunately I think there's been a few fallen trees that have blocked the path, so it is only a very short walk, ultimately up to a farm track. One of the corners of the cabin is quite exposed next to the 'path' around the cabin and my dog did cut himself slightly on it. It might be beneficial to add some padding to that corner. I used my stay to walk with my dogs around the local area, but unfortunately found that there are very limited facilities like pubs in the local area (the nearest was a 4 mile walk and was only open on Wed, Fri & Sat evenings), and disappointingly a lot of the footpaths on OS Maps were either non-existent or blocked off, so we mostly had to walk along the roads, which are very quiet anyway.

"Lovely break away"

10.0

We loved everything about the stay. The bed was very comfortable & the children also had comfy camp beds. All we needed for a peaceful break away was supplied. The shower blocks were a short walk away with a little outdoor play area for the children. We enjoyed the picturesque walk around the lake, which had picnic tables & benches at the side. We loved playing card & board games and just enjoying the quiet outdoors together. We were lucky to have lovely weather to enjoy the bbq that's supplied. We don't often go places where you can just unwind from the busyness of life, and here we did exactly that.

"Relaxing"

8.0

Total switch off from tech and the buzz of the daily grind going back to basics and quiet. Sheltered area outside seating areas with BBQ and fire pit Complete set of cutlery etc and BBQ equipment

No lighting on path to the site from car park through the lil wood or to the loo, timer on interior light too quick switched off every 30s could do with a switch mainly for when eating inside or setting up to sleep. Not a negative but could do with some stepping stones type of pathway leading to the lodge and to the toilet, got very boggie and muddied after rain fall which traipsed into the lodge on return.
