Kurohoro Machiya House

Beautiful house perfect for a family stay with all the facilities you need. It had a very relaxing but comfortable feel. It was easy to get into the house using the door code, and as soon as we telephoned the host using the house mobile, someone came round within 10 minutes to complete the formalities and make sure everything was in order. Lovely service.

Location was excellent- easy to walk to nearby attractions/food and on a quiet side street away from traffic. The house seemed very traditional but had modern upgrades like heated floors and a lovely shower/soaking tub. Check in was easy, tea and coffee were provided which was nice. We enjoyed the tatami floors and futons, but there are also 2 western beds as well. The house was very spacious for our group of 5.

Shower water was only warm (not hot) but otherwise no complaints.

Level 2 shower water was erratic. Frequently No water/not hot. Level 1 futon room has no privacy Wash basins are all on level 1

Beautiful combination of traditional interior tatami settings with modern eating table and appliances. Quiet. Logistically central location for reaching key places: moderate walks to shopping area (Omicho market, and large grocery in basement of M'Za department store), fun Japanese tapa-like restaurant (Fuwari), Edo-period Higashi Chaya geisha district . Longer walks to train and Kenroku-en gardens are also pleasant. Excellent staff help available by phone.

I hope they will soon figure out how to mute the bright white exit sign located on the landing outside of both bedrooms, as its light streams into part of both bedrooms through their paper-like internal windows (we tied a toiletries bag over the sign). Second floor had no sink with soap (assumes you have used deluxe toilet's built-in bidet), but 2 good bathroom sinks downstairs. The glazed kitchen windows seemed to unnecessarily block street views. Fortunately, the ground-floor moon door gives a view of the garden and the front door can give partial street view. Also, upstairs bedroom windows do permit attractive, interesting street views. Make sure you pay the 500 yen to get cooking oil, salt and pepper, as zero seasonings provided otherwise.
