Wonderful location in the heart of San Francisco. It's like going back in time. There were no odd smells. Checking in and out was a breeze. Easy to get to Chinatown for dim sum.

I found some hair in the bathroom that must have been missed by the cleaning staff, but wasn't a big deal. The valet parking took longer than expected.

I thought the room was charming and I liked the location it was however apparent that the room had only recently been updated (new paint and carpet) but that the makeover was done quite cheaply. Upon check in, we were given a host of rules and told in no uncertain terms that we would be held responsible for any damages. My husband and I are both in our early 60's so really don't need to be reminded of 'house' rules. This information should be left in the rooms for guests to read at their leisure

We didn't like that we were told to hand over our room key every time we left the hotel. We have travelled extensively and have never been asked to hand back a room key when we are still guests at the hotel . We also didn't like that we had to be 'buzzed' in every time we returned to the hotel as we didn't have a key to enter the premises. We were also unhappy that there was no lift access to our room, and in addition to no lift access, we were not offered assistance to carry two large heavy suitcases up a steep flight of stairs when we checked in

It's an old building, but it's cute and clean with a great staff and a great location for the price.
