Derawan Fisheries Cottage

È una struttura non curata e in decadimento. Prese elettriche e interruttori posizionati senza logica. Colazione data in una scatoletta, tipo take-away. Mancanza di un mini frigor in camera. Lo staff, che è un ragazzo purtroppo non parla molto bene l'inglese; è gentile, collaborativo, ma per quasi tutto si passa tramite il traduttore Google perdendo tempo. Purtroppo subito dietro la struttura c'è la moschea, per cui le notti non sono tranquille specie in periodo di Ramadan. Molti insetti vaganti in camera.

Owners are superfriendly and helpful. They also gave us contacts of a driver and boat man to reach the island. The location is beautiful, our cottage was very big.

Rooms are not cleaned unless you ask I guess, which we didn't do. Was not a big issue for us.

We stayed for 7 days in the Fisheries Cottage on Derawan Island. It's a nice location, but there's not much to do on the island in December. Jeffrey, our "landlord," made our stay truly enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Thank you so much, Jeffrey, and all the best.

The fisheries is an amazing place to stay on Derawan. The villa we stayed in was spacious, we had hot water and AC and the turtle watching/sunsets from the deck out back was unbelievable.

It is an amazing property but there are a couple of things that would make it even better: Something comfortable to sit or lie down on on the deck to watch the turtles/sunset (there are two chairs). There was a loose plank of wood that was banging against the side of the villa at night when the waves were high - when we mentioned this, they got on to fixing it straight away.

Beautiful location. Hundreds of turtles swimming all around and under the bungalow. Close to all the warungs and cold bintang for sale down the street near scuba junkie

Randi (I think one of the owners or staff) sold us a boat tour to maratua, kakaban and sangilaki. He told us we would go to the East side of maratua. He also said we would see jellyfish lake at kakaban and manta rays and barracuda at sangilaki. The boat driver did not speak any Englis and could not read google translate. He would not take us to East side of maratua. He took us to West side where we had to pay to snorkel. We then went to kakaban and had lunch near an inland lake. We had to pay to eat our lunch there. We then went to jellyfish lake which was closed due to the stairs and board walk falling down. We then went to sangilaki and there were no manta rays. The driver would not take us to see barracuda. The trip cost 1,500,000 plus 100,000 for lunch plus paying more at maratua and kakaban and not seeing anything that randi had promised. We were back to derawan cottages by 2.30pm. Was a total waste of money. We do not recommend booking this tour.

The transfer (airport shuttle from Berau Airport to Deriwan) was excellent and this is the real reason I score this place high not because of their accommodation. Transfers from Berau are timely and costly. I tried several resorts on Maratua who couldn't accommodate my tight transfer schedule (I only had 48h between in and outbound flights and wanted to stay for 2 nights). If you have a similar tight schedule and still want to see a lot (which I did like the resident whale shark) try Deriwan who arranged a speed boat to Tanjung Batu ~35min, then ~2 car journey from there, allowing me to catch an outbound flight at 9 am (4 more costly resorts told me it is impossible to stay for 2 nights on Maratua with my schedule). The owner was highly responsive in communicating and arranging this! Special mention also goes to the speed boat driver Sony who took me everywhere for 2 days and the Jeffrey who tailor-made breakfast and was like a personal assistant in the island. If good logistics, as opposed to fancy accommodation is your priority, I can highly recommend this place.
