Mokuren Traditional Boutique Townhouse

Beautiful machiya-style home in Gion but just outside of the hustle and bustle making for a quiet, convenient, and comfortable stay. Our family of 5 slept very comfortably on the futons in the tatami rooms, with excellent A/C in every room sheltering us from the heat and humidity. A very short walk from nearby bus and train stations, it was incredibly easy to get our days started. Lots of excellent food options within a few minutes walk too! Would highly recommend!

Good to stay in a traditional town house. Good communication from owner. A bit cramped for 6 adults but by moving futons around we were comfortable. Great bathroom/shower/hot tub. Excellent location - close to metro trains, convenience stores and a reasonable range of restaurants. Good information via QR codes once in the house. We enjoyed our stay. Thanks

Could do with a couple more western height chairs. Couldn't seal the twin wash basins in the bathroom. Neither could we seal the sink in the kitchen area which made washing-up problematic. No tea towels were supplied, or was it that we couldn't find them? A bit more information on using the washing machine would be useful. We only knew about Kyoto city tax from other reviews. This wasn't a problem, BUT Booking.com SHOULD have made this clear. Its an extra Y200 pp.pn. paid at the house.

Good location, 2 large bedrooms, 2 toilets although 1 shower. Dining room could easily be made into a 3rd bedroom if someone has problems with stairs.

No hand soap in the toilet/sinks closets makes it feel dirty touching the door to open.

This is an absolute gem of a property, for us (family of three with 18 y/o son) it couldn’t have been better. It is less than 3 minutes to choices of convince stores, choices of restaurants, bus stop and subway. It is a short walk from most of the main attractions of Kyoto and the local subway (get a Suica) opened up the parts of Kyoto that weren’t a few minutes walk from Mokuren. The photographs do not do justice to how spacious, well appointed and jolly comfortable Mokuren is, but most of all, no description or photos cannot explain how well situated it is. It’s far enough from the main road that you can’t hear it inside and the occasional moped going by is the most disturbance we encountered. Absolutely brilliant find, we could not have been happier and, without a single doubt, we absolutely recommend Mokuren as THE place to stay in Kyoto.

Air conditioning was the noisiest thing in the street - this is not a negative aspect, merely indicative as to how lovely, calm and quiet the property is.

Beautiful, traditional Japanese house. Lovely tatami mats and futons, in a quiet residential area. Amazing bath and vanity area too. In a good location, a short walk away from amazing sightseeing spots, but out of the hustle and bustle of the main street. There were some lovely cafes and restaurants in the local area too.

Because the house is old, the walls are quite thin. So, if you're a light sleeper, make sure to bring some ear plugs.

The neighbour would knock on our door and shush us during daytime hours, as in prior to 7pm. We weren’t making loud amounts of noise either, sometimes we were just talking as a group at normal conversational level. Also would be nicer if it was explicitly stated it was 3 beds in each room.
