Casa Altamira was a delightful surprise — a charming old building in the middle of a tiny village along the Douro River. The location is stunning, with peaceful views over the countryside, mountains, and river. The couple running the property are warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which made our stay feel personal and special. That said, there’s room for improvement. The mattress and pillows were not comfortable, and a fridge in the room would make a big difference, especially since the property has no restaurant and the village itself offers little within walking distance. While there’s an effort to give the house an aristocratic touch, some details (like the doors, closet etc) feel dated. Breakfast leans toward the rural side, which suits the countryside setting, though it could be refined to match the charm of the place. Overall, Casa Altamira is a peaceful rural getaway with lots of potential — and with a few thoughtful upgrades, it could truly shine.

First things first, Tiago was beyond great in making sure we felt like home even prior to check-in. Tiago and Alexandra introduced us to this immaculate property/palace full of grace, comfort and heritage. They were available at all times and without such remarkable customer service this experience would have not been so unique.

Casa Altamira was unlike any hotel we’ve stayed in—it felt more like visiting my rich relative’s countryside cottage than staying at a guesthouse. For the first time, I truly understood the meaning of “hospitality” in a foreign land. Nestled in nature by the Douro River, its setting was stunning and peaceful. My husband and I booked five nights with breakfast, hoping to balance the city life of Porto with a countryside retreat, not realizing what a treasure we had chosen. Our experience began the moment we arrived. Even though we were early, the manager, Mr. Tiago, welcomed us warmly and offered either rest or a guided tour. We chose the tour, which felt like walking through a living museum. The villa, dating back to the 1800s, showcased family photos, antiques, and stories of winemaking. The grounds were just as charming, with terraced gardens of grapes, kiwis, berries, and tomatoes, along with sheep, chickens, and three affectionate dogs—Magy, Cacau, and Fausto. Breakfast was a highlight. The dining room glowed with sunlight, our table beautifully set with our names, and every dietary request was remembered throughout our stay. It was personalized, thoughtful, and unlike any hotel breakfast we’ve had. Evenings brought their own magic—we spent nights on the terrace watching the stars and city lights. With Tiago’s recommendations, we explored hikes, river beaches, canoeing, boat trips, and excellent local restaurants, where he kindly made reservations for us. What truly made Casa Altamira unforgettable was the hospitality of Tiago and his wife, Alejandra. They cared deeply for their land and guests, blending professionalism with genuine warmth, generosity, and humility. We felt at home, cared for, and incredibly fortunate to have discovered this gem. Thank you, Casa Altamira, Tiago, and Alejandra—you gave us memories we’ll treasure forever.

It would be nicer to have see-through glass in the room's balcony to enjoy the view better while sitting (I know this this too much but not a bad idea). It would make it better if the hotel maybe had access to transportation cars/companies to drive guests to different locations in case they do not have their own car (for extra fees of course). It would make it easier to offer guests, maybe a one-night dinner on the terrace in case they do not want to go out every time for dinner during their stay (for extra fees of course and pre-reserved).

Tiago (the manager) was really friendly, and the semi-rural nature of the hotel really lets you relax - just walking around the gardens with the dogs and Tiago is a great way to come down to earth. The three dogs are all very welcoming!

The breakfast was only so-so, with a big focus on sweets (fruit, brioche, jams, sweetened juice, flavoured yoghurt). The pillow was incredibly high, which made it hard to sleep.

Tudo absolutamente magnífico. A casa e os quartos são lindos e muito limpos, a localização é incrível e fomos muito bem recebidos e cuidados por Tiago e sua esposa Alexandra. Foram super pacientes com nosso atraso para o check-in e ainda montaram um café da manhã incrível na varanda com uma vista maravilhosa. Ficamos muito satisfeitos com tudo. Planejamos voltar com certeza. Destaque para os cachorros da propriedade que são lindos e dóceis.

Nos gustó todo, el hotel es increíble,la ubicación cerca de una playa fluvial a 5 min.Tiene unas vistas espectaculares y sobre todo destacar la atención tan amable de Tiago y Alexandra , encantadores , muy recomendable !!
