Large comfortable room

Heater wasn’t working but rectified quickly for us. Cleaner had missed quite a few items.

Great location - could walk straight out onto the seafront to watch sunset. Walking distance to hotel excellent food. Very well equipped, clean and toasty warm even in cold weather.

"Best choice to stay at Punakaiki!"

9.0

The fact the seaview was more than cherry on top on both sunset and sunrise moment. The place was surrounded with great views and I love how private and safe we feel. The place is made with top comfort.

None.

"Don't bother staying here if you want clean"

1.0

We stayed here after finishing the Paparoa Track and unfortunately would not recommend this accommodation, especially for the price. The only real positive was the hospitality at the associated bar — both lunch and dinner were excellent, and the staff there were lovely. However, the motel itself was very disappointing. Our first room had a strong musty smell which we initially put down to the West Coast climate. Later that evening, after turning on the electric blanket and returning to the room, there was an overwhelming vomit-like smell. To their credit, the receptionist agreed it was unacceptable and moved us to another room at around 9pm in the rain. Unfortunately, the second room was not much better. While it didn’t smell, the cleanliness was extremely poor. There was pink mould on the shower head, hair in the shower, toothpaste splatter on the mirror, urine marks beside the toilet, and so much dust on the rubbish bin I could literally write my name in it. At checkout, when I mentioned the cleanliness issues, the receptionist even acknowledged the rooms were not very clean. After completing the Paparoa Track we were exhausted and just wanted somewhere comfortable and hygienic to sleep, which really shouldn’t be too much to expect for $235 a night. What made the experience even more disappointing was the complete lack of willingness from the property to properly engage with or address the concerns raised afterward. Given the condition of both rooms and the late-night room change, we expected at least some acknowledgement or attempt to resolve the situation fairly. In our opinion, the close finish to the track is simply not worth it. You would be far better off walking a little further and staying somewhere like Scenic Circle, where the rooms are actually clean and, when we stayed, were even cheaper than this property.
