"Surprisingly comfortable despite zero sunlight; concerns around lack of staff in event of emergency"

7.0

I was surprised at how comfortable this hostel was, given that there is zero natural light. I was expecting it to be much worse. It was very quiet, and the location is excellent. The kitchen is very large and well-equipped, and the common room would have been inviting, if it had any natural light. But it's nice that it's available. There's a nice youth hostel vibe, with people from all around the world cooking together, so it's easy to chat with fellow travellers. There were only 1-2 other New Zealanders there with me, most were from overseas.

The lack of windows really does take getting some used to, as there are none in the common rooms either and also none in any of the hallways or bathrooms or toilets. Think: massive big warehouse with windows just at one end, and those are private rooms so those doors are always closed. Also, there are no staff on site, and the cleaner speaks zero English, so you have to call a phone if you want to speak with someone. This lack of English (particularly in an English-speaking country) is also a safety hazard. In this case, I was asking her where the staircase was in the event of a fire and she tried to tell me to take the elevator, which of course is total nonsense in the event of a fire. I do not want to have to get out an app and translate my question into Mandarin in an English-speaking country, and particularly not when I'm asking where the fire escape is, just in case. And given that there is zero staff on site, I would hate to think what might happen if a fire were to start in the middle of the night. No offence intended but there should be at least one member of staff available on site who speaks English, in a property of this size, as people cannot start trying to find and read the fire escape instructions, in the middle of a fire, if it were to happen. I was at this hostel shortly after the Wang Fuk Court fire in Hong Kong which killed over 160 people, so such fires DO happen and given that there are no windows and no English-speaking staff on site, I'm not convinced that this hostel is adequately fire-safe.

They clean everyday. For a long stay they clean weekly your room: change bedsheets + towels Great facilities providing everything It's in the city center/university area Good connections train + bus Great rooms with comfortable mattress, table to work, refrigerator, many plugs, closet

Nothing to say. It look to me as an university residency

Location was ok.

the room without window felt and looked like a prison cell. super small. It did have a fridge and a desk but hardly any space for my stuff. It was cheap so one cannot expect too much, but I would never again book a no window room here. (In all fairness I did book late at night when I was tired and thought i booked a window room)

The location is in the CBD & very convenient to Spark arena for concert attendance. The Britomart train station is a short walk & bus stops are close by for travel to all directions. There are numerous places to eat in the vicinity.

I had an interior room which was very compact with no ventilation so it became very hot & stuffy. A fan was supplied but this merely circulated the hot stale air & was noisy.
