"Just like Immortals living among the clouds (Unzen雲仙)* 雲: clouds, 仙: immortals"

8.0

i have no issues with staying at old building, i felt it is well maintained, i didn't find anything haunted, creaking or cranky at all!!!!!!!! Love it so much, and i m staying all alone Old is truly gold! so long it is quiet and peaceful! This is my very first time (not just a personal bath w wooden tub) having a dry sauna (although i didnt really use it) I wish its public bath can top up with some volcanic mud or some form of scrub for occupants too! even the onsen(Spring) waters are different , it is milky in colour! the Only imperfection is - it is not really beauty onsen that has a strong impact on the skin after bathing Oh ya! worth mentioning: i hope that when the public bath are swapped over (every next day) , the men's rooms get to use the same products (by Kose) too!!! Nothing much to pick on its food (be it the dinner or the next day breakfast), it is an quite "experiential" mean where we get to play or cook our abalone, decide how much fondant cheese to go with your food!! The server even recommended that the remaining cheese to be added to the rice for a flavourful meal! (but it is just too sinful!!) Also, the journey from shimabara area, kumamoto or from Hakata or nagasaki is really a long bus trip!! Plus: if you like to learn more about volcanic activities, u will surely love here...the smoke around makes it even more like living in heaven! Plan: here are other activities like making your flat senbei biscuits - however i would advise u to go during lunch to afternoon time, not to go in late afternoon to avoid disappointment Do always ask for a latest updated bus schedule to prevent long waiting time too

"Excellent onsen and cuisine"

10.0

Stayed with the family. A quite traditional ryokan with 4 different baths that rotate between men and women daily. They are famous for their milky water, and the modern bath on the rooftop of the new wing. Rooms are quite spacious and well-maintained, although the ones in the original building are showing their age. Try to request for one in the new wing. Dinner and breakfast are served at one of a few restaurants in the ryokan (not in room), although staying guests get to use the private rooms. The food is exquisite, and probably the best we had on the trip. Service is top notch, and they give you small thoughtful farewell mementos in your car if you are driving.

"Disappointing"

4.0

Based on the traveler photos, and generally positive reviews, my wife and I booked a non-smoking room for one night in mid-April that included dinner and breakfast. Unzen has a lot going for it: the jigoku are interesting, the national park has good hiking, the view if you take the cable car from Mt. Nitta is great, and it's an easy drive to Shimabara to take the ferry over to Kumamoto. My recommendation would be to confirm that your room is reserved in the new building. Our room on the top floor of the old building was dated and really in a quite poor, worn condition. Cooling the room in April was a challenge, and I can't imagine what it would be like in the summer months. The room next door was a smoking room, and the air from that room vented into our room. The staff were all quite nice. The onsen/rotemburo were OK, but nothing special based on the many other baths we've experienced in Japan (on this month-long trip or on previous long vacations in Japan). The dinner and breakfast were also just average. So our stay was a disappointment, especially so given that the room price with full board wasn't inexpensive. To sum up, I'd only book this hotel if nothing else was available in Unzen, and then confirm the room was in the new wing.

"2nd visit "

8.0

My return to this hotel show the satisfaction I have for this place. First time many years ago without the new wing and this time I got a chance to try the new onsen at the rooftop that comes with a view of the wood and Sakura. Dinner is usual good and service is always at his TOP.

"Beautiful ryokan in Unzen"

10.0

Travelled with my parents, took the car ferry over from Kumamoto. I recommend staying in the New wing which has new modern rooms. Wonderful rotenburo but the no 1 best thing was the food! Best value and best food I’ve had in a ryokan. Course after course of sumptuous food!

"pleasant, restful ryokan with very good food and great rotemburo"

10.0

Staff were very helpful, great cuisine, great open air baths. Staff issued good maps and directions for the bus stop for Mount Unzen Park. I arrived a little early so they served me coffee while I waited for the room to be prepared. One point to watch, is that if you are paying by credit card, say you want to pay in yen, or the staff will choose the dynamic option which is slightly more expensive (the card company charges you in your home country currency)

"Do not miss this hotel, best service ever!"

10.0

Our family was staying in this hotel last week. We were very impressed with the hospitality shown to us that I make it a point to write a review here. From arrival to departure, Fukudaya did not disappoint. It’s a traditional hotel with a modern twist , cosy ambience. Unfortunately, I fainted during the trip. The hotel managers and staff were quick to response to me. Mr Yamabe , one of the managers on duty even drove a separate car behind the ambulance and waited for me while I was been treated in the hospital. After that, he tirelessly drove us back to the hotel which was an hour away. This hotel is highly recommended.

It was really good old-modern style hotel. Most of co-workers are very friendly and good hospitality! The food was excellent, lots of Lokal vegetable, seafood and meat. (Well, except for cheese fondue) Japanese Style breakfast was really excellent!! Kind of difficult to communicate at restaurant in English, but I am sure they treat you nicely! Hot Bath outside was really nice and beautiful, if it's not crowded. Definitely I will recommend this hotel in this area!

"Worth the splurge - especially if you're vegetarian!"

10.0

We went for half-board, and I am so glad that we did! Not only is this hotel top-notch in terms of service and rooms, but the food is just phenomenal. As a vegetarian, I've struggled to get decent/healthy/delicious meals throughout my time travelling through Japan. We arrived and were told our dinner would be at 7pm, which seemed a little early (we arrived at 6.30pm) but we soon understood why - about 12 courses of absolute deliciousness were coming our way! We had alerted them to the fact I didn't eat meat or fish, and I was served imaginative and scrumptious food from start to finish. It just kept coming! The non-veggie options also looked amazing Breakfast was much of the same, about 7 courses which was a strong start to the day. Service was just excellent. Wi-fi worked throughout hotel. Onsen were amazing - male/female switch each day, so you'll get to experience all of the baths, and they were some of the best we'd visited so far. The infinity bath overlooking the forest was our favourite - outdoors wit a cold plunge pool. Just perfect Highly recommend this hotel - well worth the spend as a treat

"Unzen Fukudaya Ryokan is the Ryokan you love to stay in Unzen !!"

10.0

My wife and I stayed in Unzen Fukudaya Ryokan a month ago. We took an hour and a half Shimatetsu bus ride from JR Isahaya station. Very conveniently the bus stop to get off was right in front of Fukudaya Ryokan. We stayed there for wonderful two nights. Our room was spacious, Onsen (natural hot spring) within Fukudaya Ryokan was so nice. The food and the service were out of this world. It was very cozy and relaxed atmosphere inside of Ryokan. The location was perfect to visit to a famous “Unzen Jigoku (Hell)”, it’s only 5 minutes walk from Fukudaya Ryokan. Fukudaya Ryokan’s CEO Mrs. Fukuda and all staff members were very kind to us. They respect their guest immensely. The day we left Fukudaya Ryokan, we waited for a bus to go back to JR Isahaya station, then we saw 3 male staff members of Ryokan were helping the guests who were leaving in 3 separate cars from front of Ryokan. As all 3 cars were leaving to the same direction, all 3 staff members immediately bowed deeply towards leaving cars for at least 10 to 20 seconds. We were so impressed. You would be welcomed and respected when you stay in Unzen Fukudaya Ryokan. We love to go back again and we can recommend to Unzen Fukudaya Ryokan to anybody without hesitation.
