It was an excellent hotel the staff were very helpful and attentive. The food was really good. The rooms were very clean and comfortable.

The road outside was busy but the room was very sound proof so was no problem.

Being able to eat there in the evening was a real bonus - a good menu and the breakfast was great too .

This sounds very picky but I use a CPAP machine and usually clip the oxygen pipe behind the head board so a fixed headboard stumped me - but a minor point.

We had a very enjoyable stay overall. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. The food in the restaurant was excellent, and breakfast was a highlight – generous portions, very tasty, and served quickly. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere, and the tea and coffee facilities in the room were well stocked. The room itself was comfortable, with a large, comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. The shower was excellent, with good water pressure.

There wasn't anything significantly negative about our stay, but there are a couple of areas that could be improved. We noticed a few hairs in the bathroom when we arrived, so perhaps a little more attention to detail during cleaning would help. Our room faced the road, which was busier than we expected and could be quite noisy if the window was open. We could also hear some noise from the corridor and neighbouring rooms, although this is perhaps understandable given the age and character of the building.

The views of surrounding country side, the food was very good.

Steep stairs for an 83 yr old and the hand bannister rail was poor on one of the staircases.

After a lot of walking in nearby Durham it was lovely to sit and relax in the beautiful garden with bucolic, tranquil views. The staff could not have been more helpful and food was great which is good as you are a little way away from anywhere else so it's ideal to eat there.

No downside.
