Holiday Inn Portsmouth Downtown by IHG

First let me say that the staff is super friendly, and this is the only real choice in town, given that it is likely where you will stay, and given all of that it will make do. The price was a little high for the quality of the hotel. But again, there really isn't another option within 30-45 minutes. I spend about 50-60+ nights a year in hotels. I have to come to town a few more times for work over the next few months and I very well might stay somewhere else and just drive back and forth 45-60 min to another town, when I have to come back. While it looks like they tried to do some updates it is still pretty weathered and at this should really only be about $115-130 per night max. When rooms normally go for about $200+ with taxes. It would rank it below other hotels in this $200 price range in other OH, MI, KY cities. Another deal breaker for me is that they don't allow firearms in the hotel, which can make for difficult situation as I don't think you want to leave anything of value in your car in the parking lot. I don't know why hotels do this. There was a fair amount of outside noise in my room from the adjoining rooms and the outside, and the doors for the adjoining rooms aren't double doors which adds to noise and feels less secure. While it wasn't dirty and they had recently updated furniture it didn't "feel" clean. It is a shame that this isn't a little better option or a better price. There were many good restaurants in the area, and a very polite and welcoming front desk.

Unlike many hotels there’s no breakfast buffet so we paid a little extra for a made to order breakfast. They must be severely understaffed in the kitchen because both days took forever; in fact, on day two we waited 40 minutes FOR BREAKFAST and never received our food and we needed to get on the road so we left. Front desk was nice enough to refund the cost of the breakfast voucher and the waitress was incredibly nice and very sorry it had taken so long. Went back to tip her as we didn’t feel should she be punished for something out of her control, and it just so happened that our meals were ready. She bagged them up so we could take them with us. Overpriced room because Holiday Inn is the only hotel in town so they can gouge people and they’ll pay or go miles down the road. Room was nice although bathroom was a bit outdated and there were cobwebs in the corners. Pool and fitness center were filthy dirty. For the price we paid we definitely expected and should’ve received more from this hotel.
