I have such mixed feelings reviewing this hotel. On the one hand, this is by far one of the most gorgeous hotels I've ever been at. We decided to splurge on the Intercontinental in Beppu as a treat, and the location, facilities and views well exceeded our expectations. The room was huge, generous, had every modernity and luxury we could imagine and more, provided beautiful views and a spacious balcony. However the service was baffling, as I will detail below, which completely marred the experience and indeed I am not able to recommend this hotel, nor would I want to return to it. We enjoyed the outdoor jacuzzi, the gym was top notch with a view, the breakfast variety was wonderful.

Considering the level of the hotel and that it has plenty of space, being out of the city, some more attention could have been provided to parking. The parking is a bit of walk or requires outdoor stairs, both options would not be ideal for people with limited mobility, and seemed in incongruity with the other opulent features of the hotel. The really disappointing thing was the service staff. I was surprised that in such an international, top tier hotel, the level of communication with the staff was below average. I had two examples where communication was extremely frustrating. In one case, I asked the lady at reception, what area in Beppu would be good for walking around in the evening and finding a place for dinner. Bafflingly, she asked us to sit down, disappeared behind closed doors, only to return to her reception position within a few minutes without further addressing us. I came over to say nevermind, we will figure it out, at which point she apologized profusely. Something appeared to have been lost in translation, though I don't think this was an especially challenging interaction. The second issue was when we tried to order coffee at the bar, it was a comedy of errors which resulted in an extremely confused staff person who after asking us multiple questions and back and forth provided us with sub-par, expensive and lukewarm coffee. Again not something I would expect in this level of hotel. There were other small issues where discussions with the staff were confusing or unsatisfying, despite what seemed like their best efforts, but just seemed like they were ill equipped with dealing with international guests.

A true dream of style and relaxation

Very nice view and location overlooking the Beppu Bay. Design of the hotel is very comfortable, chic and casual luxury. Room is very beautiful and the restroom is awesome (very spacious). The onsen and view are very nice.

Nothing I don’t like in particular. I just hope the booking is specified saying the room view is not facing the Beppu Bay, since I booked the room with the expectation to see Beppu Bay from the room balcony. The booking website didn’t specify so I thought all rooms are facing the Beppu Bay based on the pictures available.

최근에 지어진 훌륭핰 호텔입니다만 서비스가 전혀 그에 걸맞지 않습니다. 수영장 베드 이용이 50분씩이라는 안내를 했다가 안했다가 하다가 저희가 맥주와 피자를 먹으니 말 못하다기 맥주 줄어들기를 기다리다가 가급적 먹고 빨리 베드를 비워달라 하여 불쾌하였고 조식이 정말 가짓수도 적고 맛도 별로입니다. 같은 음료를 시켜도 작은 물컵에 담아 서빙되는 사람과 큰 음료컵에 서빙되는 사람이 있어 황당했습니다. 이후 후쿠오카 그랜드하얏트 조식 및 서비스와 비교되었습니다. 체크인, 주차, 체크아웃, 룸서비스에서는 진정한 hopitality를 느꼈어요. 다만 레스토랑, 수영장(레스토랑 직원과 동일함) 서비스는 매우 의아하고 불쾌했습니다.
