San Diego Mission Bay Resort

Steve, Rob, and Jaden made our trip incredible. They were so lovely to talk to, very professional, and all make incredible drinks. The resort was also lovely. The boutique was super cute. Bed was comfy. I would mainly come back though just to see Steve, Rob, and Jaden.

My husband and I booked a 1 night stay at Mission Bay Resort as we have done when visiting family in San Diego for the past 14 years. We have always enjoyed the grounds, the bar, Covewood Restaurant and the views of the bay. The last time we were there was 3 years ago and it has drastically changed since our last visit, unfortunately this trip was horrible! We reserved a single room with a King size bed, that over looked the grounds. Our room was on the second floor, at the end. As we walked up the stairwell to our room my first thought was how dirty it all appeared. When we got to our door we could see the roof of the attached building below and all the roof tiles were broken and covered with dirt and debris so we knew it had been like that for some time. Upon entering our room I was taken back! It wasn't the usual crisp, clean, modern beach resort look and feel we've experienced in past visits. The room was dingy, and very cheap looking! Honestly, I've stayed in Best Western's that were far more inviting. The bed and bed covers looked old and second hand, the nightstands and lamps looked like something you'd find in a Motel 6 in Las Vegas! There was a corner table and floor lamp with only 1 chair. As I opened the sliding door to the balcony, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. It was dirty, the upholstered chairs stained and the paint was peeling off the wood shutters. The bathroom was stark and uninviting as well. When I pulled back the bedcover to get in bed I realized there was no fitted sheet, only a flat sheet that wasn't even tucked in! It honestly appeared as if it had already been slept in. At this point I had had enough. I called the front desk, expressed my disappointment and asked if housekeeping could come up and properly make the bed. 15 minutes later a man showed up and handed my husband 3 more flat sheets and a blanket and let us know there were no fitted sheets, and he left. 10 minutes later another man showed up and asked if we wanted him to make the bed!!!! Are you kidding me! By this time we had remade the bed ourselves and didn't need nor want his assistance. As I laid in bed I noticed water stains on the ceiling, the vent for the air-conditioning was dirty and the entire room looked haphazardly constructed and put together. There was a coffee maker (the coffee was horrible) but no mini-fridge or microwave. Looking out over the grounds (which are still beautiful) you could see from the 2nd floor that all the rooms below us, as well as the balconies had dirty patios which could easily been cleaned with a pressure washer, but hadn't been cleaned or swept in months! The entire resort felt run down, like they just didn't care anymore. After 14 years, we will not be going back! Yes they have many amenities but when the rooms and the resort aren't well maintained, it just doesn't feel like you're staying anywhere special. The Covewood Restaurant was good and had good service as well, but it too didn't look upscale or inviting like it had in the past and not like a resort restaurant should. There are many, many places to choose from in San Diego and as far as I'm concerned, sadly, you can look past Mission Bay Resort.

I stayed at this property with my family this past week during a hectic time with kids tournaments happening in the local area. But this property greeted me with warmth and was as close to a homey feel as possible being a state away. We had dinner at the restaurant out looking the water and had the pleasure to be served by Anna. She was extremely helpful with the recommendations and gave meaningful commentary on the menu that made our experiences all the more welcoming. Also, there was rarely ever a half drank cup on the table, refills were flying around to the point we were asking who’s drink was who’s. Fantastic service and will definitely be back!

The pool felt a little small for the number of guests at the hotel. Our bed mattress was very firm and you could hear the springs squeaking every time you turned over.

We visited on May 30th using a day pass for the pool, and it was an absolute blast! The atmosphere was incredibly lively with a great DJ, great, view, and there were plenty of fun activities to keep the kids entertained. The entire staff was amazing, but we want to give a special shoutout to Carlos, who was overseeing the team by the pool. He went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly and that our family was perfectly taken care of. He and our server (shorter gal with a great smile, dark hair) are an asset to the staff! This resort is actually my ultimate local secret. I bring all of my out-of-town guests here for drinks/apps (often live music!) at Covewood or a day pass at the pool. It never disappoints! Honestly, missing out on Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors points is totally worth it to experience this place! Highly recommend this spot for a premium, sunny getaway in San Diego.
