Penny Hedge, Whitby by Marston's Inns

The management appears to be cutting corners and reducing facilities since the latter part of last year. The accommodation is very tired and requires redecoration. Cutlery is not clean. Only margarine available at breakfast. Items missing from cooked breakfast. Last year tea pots were used alongside table service - tea pots are no longer available so tea bags and hot water is available on the continental breakfast area which soon becomes messy and causes unnecessary queues. Dog bowls are stored on shelves at the same level as the continental breakfast approximately 18 inches from the bread. Serving staff were seen petting dogs Sat at the bar then immediately served food to customers without washing their hands. Standards have slipped significantly since September 2024.

I recently stayed at this budget hotel and was so impressed that I ended up staying an extra night! The room was spotless, and the bed was incredibly comfortable, thanks to the high-end Hypnos mattress—super supportive and perfect for a restful night's sleep. The bathroom was another highlight: a piping hot shower with excellent pressure, plus some lovely soaps that added a nice touch of luxury. However, I did run into a small issue: the hand soap wasn’t refilled after it ran out on the first night, even though I had daily housekeeping. It wasn’t a huge inconvenience, but it was a little surprising given the otherwise great attention to detail. The only other downside was the brown, dated decor, which feels like it could use a refresh. It's a bit stuck in the past, but honestly, that didn’t impact my stay much at all. Overall, the hotel offers incredible value for money, and I’ll definitely be back!

Location was convenient, left car in car park, and walked into town, only 20 minutes. Room was not cleaned even though it said daily housekeeping. We stayed for two nights.

Quiet, simply furnished rooms.

It’s a bit faraway from the harbour if you are planning to walk. But if you are in a car then no issues at all. Use the co-op parking at the town centre for Whitby harbour visit. The attached pub was very good. Loved the fish and chips .

It is about 15 mins walk into Whitby but your car is parked on the car park. The property is comfy & all you need & clean. Staff are helpful & the new management are friendly. Well worth the stay.

Booked a Family room for new years eve & a meal in the pub joined onto the hotel, we got room 1, 1 metre from the hotel entrance, kids got no sleep due to the noise being so close to the entrance, included as with most hotels was tea/coffee, only peppermint tea & no sugar. Said check out online to save time then says take keys to reception at the end of the messing about online. Breakfast menu with no times so it was finished when we went as we checked out, we booked a table for 20.15pm new years eve in the pub what is with the hotel, what a shambles, was over full so waited 45minutes to be seated then told to hurry as the kitchen was closing, dreadful start to finish.

Great value for money and a lovely breakfast with very friendly and helpful staff.

Ideally situated for us, would definitely recommend.
