Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Amazing hotel! All around perfect.

It was an overall good stay. The hotel was a little dated and cramped. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable. The ocean view could be seen only while on the patio and included the pool area in front, but was still nice. The pool area was beautiful. The service was excellent. It was walking distance to the beach, a great restaurant- A Bays, wonderful shave ice- Gecko Girls, and shopping ( including an ABC store!) The beach was ok and had rocky sand. My main concern and something for you to prepare for is the bathroom light lights up the entire room because of the " curtained" window instead of a wall. ( It does have privacy ) You'll want to bring eye masks, and if you need a night light bring one, bc leaving the light on all night will light up the entire room.

The pool layout and proximity to the beach was wonderful.

The on-site restaurant was not great value for money. Suggest eating at one of the nearby resort malls.

Beautiful resort in the Waikoloa area, definitely made for relaxation and rejuvenation. Spend a morning working out in the state of the art fitness center or going for a nice morning swim in the bay fronting the resort. Then, spend a day hanging out by one of 3 pools are at the beach. If you’re not out exploring the Big Island you can also take in some tennis or pickleball at the courts on property. There are several dining options on property or right across the street at King’s Shops. The resort is also a few minutes drive from the Waikoloa Village or a longer drive into Kona if you’re looking for more options to eat and activities. But if you just want to take a detour from life and relax with comfortable accommodations, this is a nice option for you.

Comfortable and clean beds

Way overpriced for this kind of resort/hotel. Rooms are worn out- old. Also the common areas worn out and dirty. Like dirty flooring. Not ok. We had booked for 4 nights but checked out after just one night. We found a very nice and clean vacation house instead. Also the hotel restaurant has horrible service and bad food. We had to send our salad back.

As stated in the title, this Marriott property is showing some signs of aging. They are currently undergoing some renovations/remodeling presumably to modernize and repair some critical factors of the building. We stayed in the top floor, away from the elevators, which is typically the quietest part of the building, but we still noticed construction noises such as hammering and grinding starting as early as 8AM in the morning. Not a huge deal since we were up early to start our day, but there were several families on the same floor with smaller children that might not have as early of a rise as we did. Usually Marriott will provide you a notice of construction work underway and the hours under which maintenance is expected to be performed so that you can plan to be awake and no longer in your room to notice any inconveniences. If you want something top end, you could check out the newer Westin property just up the road. We visited there for dinner one night and that building is just a little bit extra for our tastes and the cost of a stay there was double this property at the time of our booking. Don’t get me wrong, this Marriott property was still rather pricey, but since there really are not many Marriott property options on the Big Island and we wanted to collect the points, this was our best shot. Any resort in Hawai’i is going to be on the high end of a hotel stay. The beach access for this property is pretty incredible, and you will at least want to visit once in the evening for one of those unique Hawaiian sunset photos. If you are up for water activities, I definitely would recommend you stop by Costco and get one of the snorkel sets there or expect to pay around 14 USD for a half-day rental at the beach shack (not operated by Marriott, but they will bill through to your room if you would like) if you plan to explore some of the near-shore coral reefs. I would have put this property at 4 out of 5 stars. However, we did 5 of the cultural activities offered by the resort for our last full day and we were pretty blown away by the experience. The activities were led by an older Lady named Pua and assisted by a younger lady named Makalapua. These two are like a dynamic duo of local history and culture. We participated in the Lei Kukui Welcome Ceremony early in the morning outside in the soft grass. Later in the day, the Ti-Leaf Lei Hilo, the ʻOhe Kāpala, Coconut Cup Painting, and the Hula Lesson in the Hale ʻIke area. I would highly recommend all 5 of these activities to get more exposure to local customs and traditions. This was an unexpected immersive dive into local culture and history we were not really able to find anywhere else on the island and we visited all of the National Park Service sites here. Pua was warm and welcoming to everyone in the group, giving each group some one-on-one attention to get them engaged closely. We learned a lot of history from Makalapua who patiently taught us the traditions/crafts and she even helped correct some of the misinformation we picked up on local history along our journey. Both ladies are a true treasure and passionate about their work and they were very patient with the younger ones, especially those who required some extra help. I hope that the property management recognized both of them both for the unique value they bring to the guest experience. These rare gems elevated an otherwise 4 star hotel experience to a 6 out of 5 star experience and something my family will always remember. We even got a recommendation for a locally owned place to eat on our way back to the airport, that food was out of this world delicious!
