Excellent, clean, first class facility

There was incredibly loud construciton noise from a project being done inside hotel, until 5 p.m. daily. We were not alerted of this ehen booking.

I have been to afternoon teas before, so I had a certain level of expectation based on pleasant past experience. Unfortunately, this one fell far short. From the moment we were seated it felt off. The table setting was bland - no little vase of flowers, no nice little touches at all. The empty 3-tiered tray siting there made everything look a little sad. It would have been better to bring it out when ready to serve. When tea arrived, we didn't realize until after our served left that there was no sugar or cream on the table, so we had to wait as our tea cooled before our server came by again. The plates of scones, sandwiches and desserts were unimpressive. The scones were the best of the lot. This is not an inexpensive experience. For two of us, the cost of the basic afternoon tea was $140.00, including tip. Nothing extra was ordered that would have added to the amount of the bill. As we were leaving, we noticed the required Department of Health Sanitation Report was hanging in an inconspicuous place. The rating was 93. We never knowingly go anywhere to dine where the rating is less than 96. I am shocked that an establishment like the Washington & Duke Inn's restaurant has such a poor rating. It is priced like a fine restaurant but I would spend $140.00 on a nice steak dinner somewhere else rather than tea here. On a positive note, our server was very warm and kind.

The hotel is under renovation and I loved the quote they had near the front entrance: "Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end"-unknown, This set the bar for understanding that they are under construction and to be patient. The staff was top notch in customer service, especially the servers on the bar on the dates we dined (Lunch on August 1st and 2nd). We were present for a Duke Flap course, traveling from Florida and Ohio, and we were welcomed with open arms. The servers and staff went above and beyond and deserve recognition!

We really enjoy staying at the Inn. The staff is always friendly and helpful. We like staying here every time we come to Durham.

Arrived at 11:30pm after an 8 hour drive with my son. Front desk attendant was frazzled and irritated. No greeters at the door and the signage was terrible as to where to enter the hotel during their front entrance renovation. Once we got to the room the AC was blasting but it felt SO humid for the entire evening. No remote control (luckily front desk promptly sent up a new one), and there was NO hot water even after running 5-10 minutes as front desk suggested. Luckily hot water worked in the morning as I'm sure something was finally fixed. $300+ for this??? Total bust. Only saving grace was the delicious breakfast but I could have stayed elsewhere and come just for the dining....
