If Dante had included a chapter on budget hotels in his Inferno, the Extended Stay America would have been its own circle of hell. We rented two rooms, and within minutes our sons innocently tried to turn on a lamp—only for the light fixture to fall out of the wall like a prop in a haunted house. The phones didn’t work, the rooms were coated in a mysterious layer of dust, grime, and stickiness, and honestly, I wish I had packed a hazmat suit instead of pajamas. The staff was no less colorful. The daytime front desk reeked of weed, which at least explained the cheerful haze, though not the woman sipping a Coors Light at 11 a.m. while on the clock. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re in the deleted scenes of Clerks, this is the establishment for you. For the rest of us, it was an unintentional comedy sketch where the punchline was always, “Oh no, not again.” Speaking of “again,” our room keys had the lifespan of a mayfly. One moment they worked, the next they were dead, leaving us locked out like exiles. Asking for replacements didn’t get us solutions so much as sermons—the front desk apparently doubles as a pulpit where they preach the gospel of “user error.” Nothing like being shamed by someone who is high as a kite. And let’s not forget the pièce de résistance: the “breakfast.” Muffins and a few granola bars sat lonely on a counter, like survivors of a post-apocalyptic pantry raid. The water pressure was a dribble, as if the sinks were embarrassed to function at all. In conclusion, we will not be returning, nor will we be recommending this place to even our worst enemies. Next time we’ll splurge on literally anywhere else—even a tent in the woods would feel like an upgrade.
