"Tremendous atmosphere"

10.0

I think this is my favourite place I've stayed at so far. A friend and I booked last minute to do a bit of ghost hunting through the night (quietly of course) and although we didn't have much activity here, the atmosphere is tremendous. You can feel the life this small pub has had and still has today. We stayed in the Shambles room, I took the sofa and had the best night's sleep I've had in a long time. (perhaps the ghosts sensed that I'm sleep deprived) While it can get a little noisy outside in the early hours, because of where it is and how central it is, this is to be expected. The room was absolutely stunning, felt very regal. I absolutely loved every minute of this stay and will definitely return. This stay is a must for everyone. Thank you for having us ❤️

Loved all of it. Nothing bad to report

"Good pub and accommodation in York city centre"

9.0

The Golden Fleece is quite a unique pub steeped in history dating back to the early 16th century, with several TV ghostly type programmes creating much interest from home and abroad. My wife has always wanted to stay here for the experience so we booked the best room which is a suite on the top floor which overlooks The Shambles. This suite has a firm foot in the past with poor lighting, dated looking furnishings, a 4 poster bed, a lounge and a good size bathroom offering a walk in shower and a free standing bath with adjustable feet which are much needed because of the obvious slope in the room (perhaps a spirit level would be useful here!!) We have experienced a table moving in the bar downstairs on a previous visit and thought an apparition may pay show up overnight which didn't happen, we did however enjoy the vibe in the room/suite and enjoyed the live music and chatting to the locals and visitors alike in the downstairs bar accompanied by Mr Bones the skeleton who can be found sitting on a stool at the bar, he is alas is looking a little worst for wear these days as some unsporting customers have nicked his arms and legs!

Breakfast could be better

"Loved staying here, was drawn to it primarily for its haunted history, and it definitely has creepy vibes.. staff are lo"

9.0

Everything that I love - extremely old building full of character and period features.. low ceilings, wooden beams, wonky floors! All the spooky decor is great too, it’s a macabre-lovers dream :)

Noise travels easily in this old pub, don’t expect a fully silent night

"Absolutely brilliant, would recommend and will definitely return."

10.0

Absolutely beautiful - an historic building with many a tale to tell. Very clean, comfy beds, excellent breakfast. 10 in 10 in terms of hospitality.

Be wary if you find uneven floors unsettling. Also, I’d advise that you keep a safe distance from other guests as from what we experienced, they’re hardcore ghost-hunters. We came back to our lodgings and the idiots in the room below ours were staging a full Most Haunted thing, there were six people in the stairwell which is narrow. She said “we tried to get in your room but you’d locked your door.” I mean… Staff is clearly aware of this and advise that you keep your door locked at all times. Might’ve had a ghostly encounter around 05:30 but more likely it was Downstairs tapping on the door!

"Quirky, memorable, comfortable"

9.0

Staff were welcoming and helpful throughout, including storing my bag both before and beyond check-in/check-out. Location is quite perfect and the benefit of history and ghost stories a great extra. Room was quirky and memorable, comfortable. There were no downsides that weren't advertised and expected - yes, could hear the advertised music (particularly when the patrons joined in) up to 23.30; and yes, it's a pub next to an active road, so pockets of noise. The counter to that is how accessible it makes the room for bobbing in. I did 3 walking tours while there: 2 started within 5 minutes of it, 1 ended opposite to it; and all 3 included it on their route.

"Location location location!!."

6.0

The location was fabulous, everything was within a short walk. The age and the quirkiness of the building was fabulous. The room we had was gorgeous and the bed was very comfortable. Liked that there was fresh milk and bottled water for us in a mini fridge in the room. The pub itself is nice inside with plenty of unusual objects to look at! Unusual goings on... were they staged or truly down to the famous spirits! Intriguing...

The staff didn't seem to want to be there, not very enthusiastic. Our room, as beautiful as it was, was neglected. Dust everywhere, a bit of dust can be excused, but it didn't look like it had a proper clean for a long time! No heating!! There were radiators but they didn't work. An electric portable heater was left in the room, so I had that going to take the chill off! The plumbing has a mind of it's own, the shower turned itself on whilst we were sat in the bedroom and the bath turned itself off midway through me running it! I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of banging and what sounded like furniture being dragged about! Could all of this been down to the ghosts I wonder? Or was it a staged theatrical show for the guests? I actually didn't mind the 'spooky' goings on, however, could the ghosts be trained to clean the rooms I wonder! Breakfast was just ok really, nothing special. For what we paid, nearly £300 per night, I'd have expected a warm, clean room and excellent food and service.
