Aura House Isla Verde

Summary: unresponsive staff, unsecure facility/rooms, no amenities, prison cell like room aesthetic. Only recommend booking if you are out of options or traveling alone. Straight up white cement walls, a bed, and a fridge. No proper windows, no furniture, no decor. Everybody can hear everything in neighboring rooms. Killed many roaches which is strange because there’s no furniture for them to hide. You are given a sheet as your blanket. Bathroom has no vents so smell and humidity will linger in room. Old, unmatching towels are given by hotel. The toiletries in the room smell hospital grade. Hot water has to be manually turned on. When I contacted management to change rooms or cancel second night, they were not responsive but were able to respond when I asked for a hairdryer. The location is good. Right next to Calle Loiza so you have everything nearby from restaurants and the beach, also very near the hotel. The rest of the property is nice. Everything else was horrible experience.

I am going to start by saying that it really looks like the owners are trying to make a nice little boutique hotel. So the 2 star rating is for the effort, not the execution. Safety is the biggest concern. In the daytime it looks like a nice enough neighborhood but when you travel with family you want to know you are locked in safe and sound. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The front gate looks sturdy and has a passcode. The problem is that you can reach through the bars and open the gate from the inside. Then there is a second passcode for the room. This problem is that they do not change the codes per visit. There is no one on site and they text you the codes. We stayed one night each a week apart. I got the texts confused and we accidentally coded into the wrong room. So, the codes are not changed. Anyone that has had the code can get into your room at anytime. When we got to the correct room there were no screens and you could reach through the metal hurricane slats to open the door from the inside without a code. The room was mostly clean but could have used a once over and there was a mustiness that was present in the bedrooms. The bathrooms were nice and clean with excellent water pressure and temperature Overall, however, I do not believe our family would stay here again.

I read the reviews before coming so I wasn’t expecting much but it was far worse than expected. I received a text with gate and room codes for check in, no need the front gate lock is broken so we walked right in. So much for security. Next we walked around to our room and immediately upon entering we were hit with the overwhelming smell of paint. There is no front desk and no one answers the phone so we could not ask for a room change. The one small window in the room doesn’t open for ventilation, we were stuck. Everyone in the room had a headache, the smell was so bad. Next were the showers. We had NO hot water. I mean none. Thinking if was just time of day with others showering for dinner (which shouldn’t happen in a hotel anyway) my husband decided to wait and shower before we left for the airport at 4 am- still no hot water. Finally, it is a very noisy place. While this is not the fault of the hotel itself, it’s worth knowing before you book. We were woken up at midnight and again at 2 am by people outside of our room. The room itself was what I expected a bed, tv and ac. Nothing fancy, just a place to sleep. Website said bottled water, we didn’t get any but you can’t drink the water there so plan to pick some up. The shower was pretty moldy looking.

The reasons I'm only rating this 2 stars is are: The pull out bed (which was one of the cheap IKEA ones with a seam down the middle and was on the verge of falling apart) had no pillows or blankets, so we ended up using towels as blankets and we donated a pillow off one of the beds. We couldn't give them a blanket off the bed though because each bed had only one very worn thin blanket with burn/melt marks on it. The shower head sprayed water in all directions (which might be one reason there was mold in the bathroom) so that I had to stand on my tip-toes to get the water to hit my head enough to wash my hair. The door (and maybe walls) are very thin and its right next to a busy road, so it was very noisy all night with cars and people. The door was thin enough that it actually felt a little unsafe. Check-in was a little confusing because there are 2 buildings on the same block and we went to the wrong one first, but we figured it out, so not too big of a deal. The dishes from the last guests hadn't been put away yet, and there was some sand still in the bed. Lighting was the super bright blue bulbs everywhere. Outlets were high up on the walls with no shelves so we ended up pulling up chairs and suitcases to be able to charge our phones. There is very little parking. the only good things I can say are that the appliances worked, and it was just a short drive to the airport. Next time we're in San Juan, we will stay somewhere else.

The room it’s self was TINY …. Towels smelled unwashed we ended up buying our own.. concrete flooring is terrible feels dirty.. Rooftop loungers were dirty.. pictures of the property were very misleading..Room doors loudly slamming all night literally jolting you out of your sleep.. Staff was helpful when needed
