"Three days of stillness — one of Australia's most extraordinary escapes"

10.0

We spent three days at Corinna Wilderness Village in early May and left genuinely reluctant to return to the real world. No mobile coverage, no internet, no noise from outside, just the rainforest, the river, and the kind of stillness that is increasingly hard to find anywhere. The cottages are rustic in character but modern and comfortable inside. A fireplace warming the room, lights turned low, no television. We dropped our bags on arrival and just sat and talked. It already felt like exactly what we needed. The MV Arcadia II river cruise was the finest guided experience we have had anywhere in Australia. The skipper's commentary on the region's history, the convict past, the Tarkine, the true story behind the Pieman River's name, was delivered with the ease of someone who has lived inside this landscape. The vessel itself, the last Huon Pine river cruiser still operating in the world, makes the river feel older just by being on it. We also hired a double kayak for a half day and paddled to Lovers Falls, an experience we will not forget. Mist on the ridgelines, the forest doubling itself in the still surface of the river, and a waterfall that emerges through the canopy without warning. On the return we paddled up the Savage River to the ruins of the SS Croydon, quietly surrendering to the riverbed since 1919. The walking tracks are outstanding. We covered the Huon Pine Walk, the Savage River Walk, the Link Track, the Whyte River Walk, and the Mount Donaldson summit across our stay. The fungi along the Link Track alone stopped us in our tracks, vivid orange caps, coral fungi in an intense red, and tiny translucent blue specimens that looked like something from the ocean floor. Dinner at the Tannin Restaurant was warm, unhurried, and exactly right. The staff, particularly Matt at the front desk, embody everything that makes Corinna special. When I asked whether he missed having internet coverage, he didn't hesitate. "No," he said. "We actually sit around and talk." That answer has stayed with me. Go. Switch your phone off. Stay longer than you think you need to.
