"Disappointing"

4.0

The building itself is beautiful, but it would be better suited as a museum rather than a hotel. The place feels dusty and outdated—they don’t even provide a kettle in the rooms, and the AC leaks. For the price, I expected much more attention to detail. Instead, it seems they rely too heavily on the building’s reputation

"Historic stay in central Stone Town"

5.0

Amazing historic building in a great location with wonderful staff. The rooms are huge! The Guest Relations manager in particular is a wonderful man and went out of his way to assist.

Unfortunately, many things are quite run down. Much of the hotel is under construction which bodes well for future, but presents challenges at present in terms of building noise during the day. Water availability became an issue due to power cuts (an external issues, so not the hotel’s fault). Overall, it felt expensive for what one gets.

The hotel is located in Stone town. There is significant noise from call to prayers. The room is large and furnished with period furniture. The stairs are high. There is no elevator and the hotel staff is helpful in taking the luggage up the stairs. The breakfast is served from the top terrace of the hotel which has a nice view of the ocean. However the quality of the food could be significantly improved (plate of fruit, mediocre egg - avoid the omelette, two small triangles of wheat bread) juice, tea/French press coffee. The water in the faucets is not potable. On the second day we asked for an additional bottle of water twice and it was never delivered. The staff is very friendly. There were fresh flowers in the room.
