The Swan Hotel

We went to Swan for mum’s 88th birthday, 6 in party, impressed with pianist, trying to remember song titles, we ordered 4 starters and 6 roasts. When we received roasts we did not click that carrots and parsnips missing! We asked waiter but got no response! Food was good, what we did receive.

We were really looking forward to this weekend as we had been very busy and just wanted to switch off for the weekend, but this hotel - where do I start? Public areas - considering it was a cold weekend - the log fires were not lit so the seating area both in the bar and elsewhere were cool - so much so that I found it impossible to sit there for any length of time. The main restaurant was warm enough and the meal on Friday night was satisfactory but nothing special for the money. However, Saturday night was very busy but it is no excuse when you know in advance how many covers you have. We waited at least 15 minutes to be served anything other than water and when you ask someone for some service it almost feels like they label you as pushy or a nuisance. There were too many young, inexperienced staff and not enough people with more experience to co-ordinate dinner service. Breakfast on Sunday was slow and same thing - when we asked for someone to take our order - it's almost as if you should just sit there and wait - no customer service there. Then we come to the rooms - room 34. I had not read the reviews before going there and thought it might just be me being picky - but no - it seems other guests have issues with similar things to me. Key kept getting stuck in the lock - in itself - quirky but alongside everything else - a pain! Safe right down on bottom shelf of wardrobe- so it hands and knees to use it - we just about managed. Bathroom for a 4 star hotel not fit for purpose. Up some slippery steps with a wobbly handrail - squeeze in - a tiny sink with a strange little lever where you have to take more than 5 minutes to work out which way for hot or cold and then...it take another 5 minutes for any hot water to come through. Shower very basic and nowhere to put the shower gel or sponge. You can't fill the kettle properly because the sink isn't big enough and just generally needing some TLC all round. Would I stay here again? Definitely not! Would I recommend? Sadly no. The location is fantastic but there are other hotels in the area and if I come back I will try one of those.

A great hotel, staff very good we had three rooms booked all clean and tidy ,we stayed one night 15th march in room 56. Our dinner was good well presented. BUT breakfastwas not good mine was served half cold not presented very well my granddaughters was the same, having paid £250 B&B,not a good standard.- I did comment to the staff- for the cost I expect better

This hotel ticked all our boxes --the staff are all excellent (special top marks to Marion on reception) but all who served us were very professional and without doubt well trained, all in all we shall return perhaps in summer and sit outside with a lovely drink--bliss.

An unique experience for character and ambience. Loved every minute of our stay.

lovely comfortable stay with our dog Bella. The best dog friendly hotel we have stayed in. Nothing was too much trouble.

Friendly & efficient staff old world charm easy access for my disabled husband attractive building wonderful food right in centre of village which had interesting buildings and shops ...would definitely recommend The Swan and would stay there again.

Great location brilliant staff the best place to stay

The hotel rooms were fine - comfortable and clean. However, we didn’t like the mass of pigeon mess and dead pigeons on the roof areas which were visible from the upstairs corridor windows. I did write to the hotel about this issue before posting a review but had no response so have to conclude that they don’t care!
