"Review from May 2026 stay"

6.0

Staff was very nice and suited our needs. 3-3.5 star place. The hotel (or at least the room we stayed in) could use an overhaul. The room we stayed in had peeling paint in the bathroom, chipped walls and could have been cleaned better (visible dust on head board, old razor blades under the bathroom sink). They may not mention this, but the hotel is next to cemetery. Not an issue for us as our deck view was nothing but trees, but I’d imagine it’s visible from other rooms. Their included breakfast was a lunch bag with a packaged muffin, chewy granola bar, apple or orange and apple or orange juice. Can upgrade to the continental breakfast for $15 plus tax, but there are great options downtown within walking distance - Winston’s is a must. The lemon ricotta pancakes are awesome!!

"Like you were right at home!"

10.0

Cutest room, clean and comfortable. It was a wonderful size, and the separation of the bathroom area was nice. The little wet bar area was so convenient - loved that there's a sink there! Didn't like having to walk across the road and up the block for the pool, and the jacuzzi was a disappointing 88 or 90 degrees with weak jets, but the arra was clean and inviting. The front desk staff were all amazing and had great restaurant recommendations that proved to be spot on....and to be able to walk down to the shore for sunset was the perfect end to each day.

"A Cost-Effective Stay in Pacific Grove"

6.0

I periodically visit Monterey, as it remains one of my favorite coastal destinations. For this trip, I decided to stay somewhere quieter and farther from the bustle of Cannery Row. I chose Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages because of its location in a peaceful residential part of Pacific Grove, next to the cemetery and within walking distance of Point Pinos Lighthouse and the coastal path leading toward Lover’s Point and Cannery Row. The property itself is attractive, with deep blue buildings trimmed in white. The lodge sits on one side of the road near the cemetery, while the cottages are across the street. I stayed in a Cottage Studio. Although not a freestanding cottage, the room was spacious, with a peaked ceiling that gave it an airy feel. The front of the room opened onto a large shared brick patio with fire pits and comfortable seating, which made for a pleasant place to relax in the evenings. The room also included a gas fireplace. While it produced more ambience than heat, it was still enjoyable on chilly nights. The older wall heater, however, cycled noisily during the night. My room had a small rear balcony facing Lighthouse Avenue, but because of the traffic noise it was not a space I wanted to use. On both mornings I was awakened by vehicles idling outside. I would recommend requesting a room away from the street if possible. One design choice particularly puzzled me: the balcony light remained on continuously and had no switch. Since I prefer to sleep in complete darkness, the light leaking through the curtains was bothersome enough that I removed the bulb temporarily. A simple switch would solve the issue. The room included basic amenities: bar soap, pump soap, shampoo, conditioner, a microwave, small sink, refrigerator, and coffee maker. Like many properties in the United States, housekeeping is no longer provided daily unless requested. One aspect of the coffee setup struck me as unnecessarily wasteful. The sugar, artificial sweetener, creamer, stir stick, and napkin were bundled together in sealed plastic packets. If you only needed one item, the remaining contents were effectively discarded. Increasingly, when staying in mid-range accommodations, I find myself bringing my own coffee supplies. The property has clearly been renovated over time. Everything was generally clean and functional, though a few maintenance quirks stood out. The shower plumbing was reversed, with hot and cold operating opposite the normal direction. Combined with the long wait for hot water to arrive, this creates at least some risk of accidental scalding. The front desk did warn guests, but correcting the plumbing would seem wiser than relying on warnings. There were also signs of the building’s age. The room doors had visible gaps around them, and the pocket door in my friend’s room had slipped off its track. I was amused to find a large round mirror mounted above my bed at a height that would only be useful to someone seven feet tall. Meanwhile, an attractive framed picture hung across the room where the mirror might have been more practical. The placement felt unintentionally comic. Breakfast, however, was a pleasant surprise. Unlike many chain motels that rely heavily on reheated premade food, Lighthouse Lodge actually employs a chef to prepare eggs, potatoes, breakfast meats, and pancakes fresh each morning. While meals are not cooked to order, the in-house buffet was appreciably better than the standard motel breakfast experience. Guests staying in the cottages receive the buffet breakfast included with their stay. Lodge guests receive a continental breakfast but may upgrade to the buffet. Overall, Lighthouse Lodge & Cottages offers a comfortable and reasonably priced stay in a quiet part of Pacific Grove. While the property shows signs of age and could benefit from attention to a few practical details, its location, atmosphere, and surprisingly good breakfast make it a solid option for travelers seeking a calmer alternative to the busy Cannery Row area.

Clean and well appointed

The laundry in the parking garage leaks so I had the walk through puddles to get to my car.
