The Midland - Manchester

Very bad experience this time. Booked same day, no word of changes to regular hotel policies when I booked and they took my money. It was not until we returned the room at 10pm that a letter - a letter(!) - was shoved under the door advising if the earlier checkout. That’s after my contract with the hotel based on different terms and policies was made, there was no option of refund or relocation. Very poor way of treating customers. I queried at reception when a checkout time of 10am was quoted instead of 11am. I was told because of the Conservative Party conference on Sunday (three days from now) they have shaved an hour off everyone’s stay - clearly without notification. We couldn’t be dropped off outside the hotel with luggage due to road closures. Nor was it easy to get a taxi from the hotel when required as steel fencing was erected around the building. If the hotel would have signposted this id have booked somewhere else and that is exactly why they didn’t advertise or say anything about. There also was not any rate reduction on the room. I once stayed 10 minutes past their regular 11am checkout and the door was literally being beaten down. No doubt my tiny over stay impacted them, well their revised checkout time and the inability to easily get to from anywhere near the hotel impacts customers and it should work that they pass a reduction on. In short, premium room, premium hotel, far far below premium standards tonight. The bigger problem is that they clearly do not care and it’s not the first time they have left me feeling like they get a whiff of money and the people who regularly stay with them are cast aside. Message to them, enjoy the once a year cash injections from people who are on time, one off visitors and I’ll stay somewhere else from no one. I’ll also pick this up with booking and my bank on the basis that revised policies and terms were not made available prior to booking the accommodation!

Fantastic food, historical hotel. Great Cocktails and Drinks and very reasonably priced, I found the prices of food and drinks to be cheaper than 5 stars in india.

I can’t rate this hotel highly enough. Not only is it a stunning building and immaculately kept, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. I had made an error with my reservation, no fault of the hotel, and the gentleman who checked me in went out of his way to help me rectify it, even offering me a free drink at the bar while he worked it out for me. Sadly I didn’t get his name but I hope he gets recognised for his exceptional customer service

The Midland is a place I’ve wanted to tick off my list for around 20 years, and I finally stayed this weekend! Firstly, the hotel itself is beautiful. The exterior architecture is stunning, and on entering you’re immediately met with a lovely scent, soft music, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The reception and bar areas are decorated beautifully and really set the tone. We were checked in around 20 minutes early to an executive room (330). The room itself was lovely — a spacious corner room overlooking the Main Street and central library. Everything was clean and well-presented, with an iron and ironing board provided. I appreciated the Elemis products (though a little disappointed they couldn’t be taken away, as many guests love a hotel keepsake!). There was also a Nespresso machine with four pods, a selection of teas, and two (tiny!) shortbread biscuits. The bathroom, however, didn’t quite match the standard of the room. While functional, it was quite dated compared to the spa facilities, and the floor tiles were missing a lot of grout. Not what you’d expect from an executive room in an upscale hotel, but as we were only staying for one night, it wasn’t a huge issue. After an evening out, we returned around 11pm and settled into the very comfortable bed, it honestly felt like sleeping on a cloud. Unfortunately, the room’s location was directly above or near a function room hosting a wedding, and the music thudded on until just after 1am. This did disturb our night’s sleep, and I feel the hotel should have mentioned it at check-in. Even a simple heads-up would have allowed us to spend that time relaxing in the bar instead (where, ironically, you couldn’t hear a thing). For light sleepers, room 330 definitely isn’t ideal — you can also hear the occasional tram passing by. The following morning, we visited the spa. Sadly, the steam room was out of order, which was disappointing. Also, be aware that robes and slippers are not provided unless you’re booked in for a treatment. You’ll need to cross a very slippery floor from changing room to spa, so bringing your own flip-flops is a good idea. The facilities themselves are fairly small with a modest pool, hot tub, sauna, and (when working) steam room. Nice enough to say you’ve been, but not somewhere I’d make a return trip for. We parked in the advertised NCP car park for £20/24 hours, which I thought was fair value for the city centre. Overall, we had a lovely stay and I would return if the price was right — but I wouldn’t pay more than £150 per night. The extras didn’t feel worth it for an “executive” experience. I would have expected at least a couple of soft drinks in the fridge and better snacks than two small biscuits. I was also surprised to see a list of basic items like toothbrushes, razors, and shoehorns for sale at £3 and up, when even budget hotels usually provide them complimentary.

The executive room was very spacious. The bathroom was large with a shower and plenty of shelf space for toiletries. Down side was we returned at 15.00 after leaving our room at 9.30 to find it hadn’t been serviced. We decided we would just get some clean towels which was harder than you would imagine as there isn’t a phone number for house keeping. In the end my partner had to wander the corridor to find someone, as reception was too busy checking people in and didn’t answer the phone. We parked in NCT car park which is £20 for 24hrs as you get a discount code from the hotel. The hotel is lovely. It has a really nice bar area where you can have a cocktail and watch the world go by. The executive rooms are quite expensive so we would expect better service.

Perfect for purpose. Beautiful room, great location and really helpful and friendly staff. I’ve stayed here before and would definitely book again. My Mum and I went to see Simply Red at the Co op. The restaurant was fully booked, so we sat in the bar and it worked out perfectly. We shared a bottle of wine had bar food and it was actually delicious; so glad we stayed in the hotel to eat. Chilled setting and lovely atmosphere. We were served by Nany; she was so helpful and kind. Harmen on reception sorted us an Uber and was also a credit to the hotel. After the gig, we sat in the bar and I played the grand piano which my Mum enjoyed. The breakfast was also pleasant, again, with staff that are so friendly and go the extra mile. We will be back, best hotel in Manchester.

Beautiful hotel, rooms were very big and comfort. Clean and tidy can't ask for much more really would deffo stay here again

Excellent stay in this hotel. Very nice breakfast enhanced by desk manager Elisabete, who was very welcoming and kind. Reception and bar staff could not do any more to help and welcome you. Room was good, but a little too hot for me without being able to open windows. Thank you.
