"Good"

6.0

"Breakfast" was minimal.... Host on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning was a splendid, friendly, knowledgeable conversationalist who also told me we should try to book locally rather than on Expedia and compare costs for possibly cheaper rates. As it was, we paid $20 more than we would have, had we booked directly w/ the hotel. The property was tired, though clean.

"Front desk attendant very rude. "

2.0

Front desk clerk very rude. Breakfast is a joke and the room needs many things done to it. Wallpaper peeling, floors and baseboards not clean and bathroom not clean. Ceiling peeling and stink bugs everywhere. Only stayed because no where else to stay in the time I needed and the price was definitely overpriced for our two night stay.will never stay there again. Also there were 5 of us and only allowed two towels, hand towels and wash cloths.

"Gross and falling apart...run down."

2.0

Pulled off I-40 late Saturday night, too tired to drive further safely. We checked in late and exhausted. Front desk clerk had no personality at all. Not glad to see us, not helpful, did bare minimum; (i think we must have disturbed his sleep or TV show.) We asked price and then about AAA or Senior discounts, he grunted "The price is the price." Too tired to continue, we just took it. When we got to the room and opened the door, the room was hot and humid.... we turned on the AC and fell into bed. The photos we took when we woke up hardly capture the run down state of the room and one has to wonder about the entire facility. In our opinion, charging full price for such a ill-kept run down facility is NOT the "Best Value in America." When checking out at 8 am, we noticed the 'FREE Breakfast' sign and asked the clerk about it, he shrugged and nodded "Over there.". Breakfast was nothing more than brown bananas, poorly stocked cereal and a few mismatched assortment of breads in a dark room that had the chairs still on the tables upside down... Not exactly welcoming anyone for breakfast. Makes you wonder how long the two inches of cereal, in the two plastic containers have been sitting in there... Because if the bananas were a guide, quite a while! We opted after seeing the unused "breakfast" room, and the ill-kept condition of our room, to find breakfast elsewhere. The only silver lining was the bed was comfortable and the air conditioner worked great.

"Terrible place to stay, Do NOT book this hotel!"

2.0

This place is awful! As soon as I opened the door to the room I knew there was no way I was staying there. The room had stains on the pillows, the room smelled awful and it was a smoking room, which I did not want. I went to the front desk to get changed to a non smoking room and the manager (or whoever he was) that was working there could not have been anymore rude. As we were checking in, there were other guest leaving warning us not to stay there. Room outlets did not work nor the refrigerator. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT stay at this place! Also, I did not have a pet but they tried charging me a $40 fee even though the hotel is listed as allowing pets. I don't even own a pet. Don't plan on breakfast in the hotel either, once you see the food you won't want to eat it!

"Rude and unfriendly hotel service and dirty sheet"

4.0

When we arrived at the hotel we were surprised by the rude and unfriendy front desk staff who was a middle aged Indian man. He was telling us that our hotel reservation was not in his system although we had booked it through hotels.com. He was very slow , had a bad demeanour and sarcastic when I was trying to show him our confirmation email. The front lobuy smelled like mold and the ceilings looked old, yellow and had dark spots. The carpet was old and dirty. I had never experienced such a treatment. Paying over $100 with hotel fees and tax was out priced but unfortunately all the hotels in the area were sold out due to the labor weekend holiday. The room appeared to be clean but the sheets had small stains on them and 4 out of 6 pillows had hair on them and they smelled bc apparantly they were not washed. I ended up going to the store and buying a sheet and pillow set after a long day all I wanted is sleep but I was restless due to the fact I didn't feel comfortable. The pool had no water in it and there was no breakfast in the morning only coffee which was very weak. I will never stay at this hotel brand again

"Seriously not worth the price."

4.0

I was unaware there was an additional charge for pets. I was also billed for a "utility" charge. The room was musty, the bathroom walls were coming apart, the refrigerator was too small to be of much use, the TV was pretty dated, the ice maker was broken, and while the front desk clerk wasn't overtly rude, he wasn't very welcoming.

"Deserted, old hotel."

2.0

Horrible hotel! Staff was argumentative and rude. Ice makers broken. Microwave was broken. Black mold covered the bathroom. Advertised "Continental Breakfast". Didn't even have coffee. Added extra fees, and didn't inform me. Would definitely stay away from this place!!

"don't stay here"

2.0

I would suggest checking out the motel 8 across the street, at least they advertised a "Hot Breakfast". I have never seen a continental breakfast so lacking....a rotten banana, 3 other small, old fruit...instant oatmeal..coffee, and that was it. As I was leaving with just a cup of coffee, I decided to check out and was having trouble seeing where to sign, saying that I didn't bring my glasses; I was berated because I came to sign something without bringing my glasses. I responded that I didn't know I would be signing anything....could not believe it...don't stay here!

"Stayed 5 days - not a problem - all good"

8.0

Okay, visiting USA on a solo holiday in June 2016. I had stayed in Nashville, Atlanta and at a few motels. My review is based on a solo traveller and just needing the basics, room, bed, chair, fridge, tv, onsuite. My personal experience is that the ABVI at Marion is fine, sure it's not a 5 star place and may be a bit old, but its functional and I stayed for a few nights over the weekdays and a weekend. Why did I stay here, well I was going to the Red White and Bluegrass Festival at Morganton and arrived a few days earlier to have a look around the area. The room was clean, (i had a non-smoker room) serviced each day, there was a laundry room where I could clean my clothes, and the pool was a nice relax at the end of a warm day. The Manager [Manzukh] was fine and helpful with anything. I know he had a couple of tough days when the cleaning staff didn't turn up and he had to service the rooms (it's a small country town area, these things happen), and he tries to keep on top of the maintenance. Previous reviewers had some bad experiences, however in general I found my stay okay. You've got to put my review into perspective, I just wanted a base to stay while touring around the area, I just needed the basics, and the ABVI at Marion provided that. There is a Walmart just down the road going into Marion and I got some food etc there and kept in the fridge and heated up in the microwave, there was also a coffee machine in the room, so along with the TV, it was fine for me. I went to Shelby to visit the Earl Scruggs Centre which was a great museum of an icon legend, and Morganton itself was a nice town. The Red White and Bluegrass Festival was great and I went for some nice walk/hikes close by in the Pisgah Forest. Hope that helps

"All the terrible reviews are true"

4.0

My mother and I booked this hotel through Expedia on a last minute overnight trip. I am a consistent Trip Advisor checker before I book anywhere, but we were in a hurry so it didn't cross my mind. The lobby smelled musty when I checked in. It is an old hotel but an open window might have helped. I stood in line and read all the fees for pets and smoking signs as I waited. I was surprised that the only form I had to fill out was almost no bigger than a bookmark. It was late afternoon but the clerk looked extremely tired or under the influence. We got our room and it was a little musty. We propped open the door as we unloaded and then wiped everything down with clorox wipes. The air was turned on the minute we opened the door and it took almost two hours for the air to kick in. We tried to be patient and ended up calling the front desk. The young man answered and immediately came to our room. He arrived and the air started working. He was perfectly polite and helpful. Old unit, no worries, but it was uncomfortable for the first few hours. Property was decently quiet, but we propped a chair against the door for safety. Some of the door frame wood didn't look like it would hold if someone wanted in bad enough. We sat down to read the reviews on Trip Advisor and were floored. Terrible review, after terrible review. I noticed that people were really angry about some mystical third party fee that was charged to their card. I checked my bank account, and sure enough, the fee was there. $11 and from a Days Inn. I was staying at Americas Best and I didn't give Days Inn permission to charge my card. Days inn is mentioned nowhere on their paperwork. There was no mention of it at check in. Thirty seconds was all it would have taken. I decided to handle it in the morning. We slept through the night, and the bed was comfortable. Upon checkout, I went to talk to the same clerk about the fee. He put a paper on the desk advising about the $11 fee and wanted me to sign it. I refused to sign and took a copy of the paper to give to my bank, as well as a copy of the form I signed when I checked in. He immediately went on the defense and was ready to do battle. All I wanted was an explanation as to why I wasn't advised of it, and a chance to be heard. The only thing he seemed to want to do was overpower me in the conversation. When he threw his finger up in my face I decided that I had had enough. I told him that I was a customer and he was being disrespectful. All he wanted to do was argue and show me that they only get sixty something dollars a night. I could tell he had been through this battle over and over so he had his speech ready. I finally had enough and walked out. An hour later I got a phone call from the hotel and I declined it. I have never been treated this way before. I am completely blown away that anyone would speak to their customers this way, and over eleven dollars. I'm not paying his fees for him to be listed on Expedia. If it wasn't for Expedia I would never have stayed at this crummy little hotel. Do your research and stay elsewhere. We should have slept in our car in the Walmart parking lot. Lesson learned. I will be calling my bank tomorrow to report unauthorized charges.
