The Metropole Hotel

Fast and efficient service delivery by Kate - worthwhile place for a meal while travelling. The food and coffee were also of quality. Recommend.

Based on ratings, the hotel is good. The restaurant however is actually bonkers. I’ve eaten there twice now on work trips and, although the food is fine (as long as you don’t need a tool which is not provided to get to the meat in the crab claws and are prepared for an unintelligible lecture on how they’re served as if you’ve never had crab claws before), the service is absolutely shocking. I’m pretty sure half the waiting staff are on cocaine and the other half on weed. Or they’re all on levels of the spectrum that are not conducive to their job. Either way, the over/under attentiveness at all the wrong times is off the charts.

I had the pleasure of attending afternoon tea with a few friends at the Metropole hotel a few weeks back. I must say we had the most amazing experience. We were served by Emily and Sean. The two of them were a delight. Emily in particular was a beam of light and energy. Her kindness was immediate and her knowledge of the hotel, the city and local experiences was incredibly helpful. It was like talking to an old friend. The food and tea was delightful. We will definitely be returning!

The Metropole is a very handsome hotel. Beautiful, welcoming lobby with gorgeous interiors in keeping with the hotel's 120 year plus heritage. Loved the colour scheme. Classic and old style, the hotel as a unique feeling of warmness to it that a lot of other hitels just lack. The bar is a stand out experience in itself. John is a wonderful asset to the place, so friendly and welcoming and able to strike up a conversation with literally anyone, I saw him welcome 3 solos and put them right at ease. The bar has a wonderful homely feel to it but what a backdrop. Straight from the movies! Pull up a stool and order from the drinks menu and I don't think it's possible fo feel lonely in a space such as this. I agree with another review re: reception staff. A more genuine welcome might be better here. Man at the door was lovely. We stayed jn a suite, again, it's an old hotel so some items in the room may need updating. I loved the 4 poster bed but mattress a bit soft, my husband felt it was fine. Nice wardrobe area. Bathroom had an eclectic mix of moderm rainforest shower head,jacuzzi bath and old style bath hose/taps. I couldn't get the hose to work and water collected rather than flowed down drain, a thing I'd usually hate but all the other elements of our stay compensated for this. Tv channels for news weren't available. (No service). Breakfast was beautiful, all freshly made and good local suppliers. A small tip might be to have newspapers available. I really enjoyed our stay and would but it top of the list of hotels to stay in the city. McCurtain is a fabulous street and the Metropole feels a little like the jewel in its crown. One last observation, the collection of potted trees at the front of the building are so beautiful!

Really nice hotel great location , bar service and restaurant service is very slow tho . And in the breakfast room we weee waiting about 10mins to get a table the food we ordered was going cold by the time it got to our table

I had a few hours to fill one evening in the city so decided to find somewhere for a quiet glass of wine. I couldn't have chosen a better spot than The Metropole. I sat in the lobby which had fantastic ambiance and live piano music. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly, especially Emily who greeted me and checked in on me over the course of the evening. I highly recommend

Perfect location, lovely hotel. Room size was good for 2 of us but was a triple room and would have been small for 3 people. Very clean and good value for the location. Breakfast was very good, freshly cooked. Staff all very friendly and accommodating.

While the staff were lovely at reception, the great experience ended there. The room was remarkably different to the photos, small, cramped and damp, with mould around the windowsill. The bathroom was lovely and spacious, but the room could benefit from this space. For a renowned hotel, I was disappointed with my experience, especially when comparing it to the likes of The Dean at a similar price point, The Metropole did not live up to my expectations nor did I feel it was worth the money I paid.

It was nice to stay there one night at the end of the Jazz Festival. The room, food and drinks were all grand. The staff at reception could be nicer and friendlier.

Jazz festival weekend at this hotel is remarkable, the whole place buzzing ....staff attentive and helpful even when under festival pressure.Our bedroom a little dated but very clean and comfortable....if anything a bit too hot and rad valve not able to turn down so window open which let in noise from bin men and gas /beer keg deliveries about 4 AM . Breakfast very good only let down by slow toaster
