As a lot of other reviews state, this place is really run down. While my room was clean, it was beat up. Tiles missing, pieces of wood trim or parts of a wood door missing. The front door is wood slats so any bug can crawl right in to your room. I even had a small lizard make it in. No towels ever available at the pool. Housekeeping does not come everyday. Very few pool or beach chairs. Beautiful location and the beach is gorgeous. The staff was friendly and they were really trying, but seemed very stressed. There are a few local restaurants a few minutes down the main road that were all very good. The hotel’s bar is the only place we tried on the resort and it wasn’t that great. Not terrible, but I would not go there unless you have to. It’s too bad the upkeep is so poor because it has such potential.

Location, location! The hotel is on a lovely private beach, so you can walk out of your room to see God's stunning creation, and be practically alone. The pool was clean, and you can order there from the bar. Our maid came every day; linens and towels were clean; bed was comfortable. Grounds were gorgeous. Free coffee at the restaurant in the morning; this wasn't mentioned anywhere, so I am writing it here for the next person. So close to the trail to Annaly tide pools.

The whole island is in a general state of slight disrepair, patchy paint, and slow service. I found that charming because it felt like being on vacation, and like it didn't matter if my hair was messy and I woke up late. But if that kind of thing bothers you then you won't like it here.

I recently returned from my stay at Carambola and I really found the resort to be quite nice. The view and proximity to the beach view rooms is amazing. The rooms allow you to hear the ocean throughout the night and I loved sitting out on the balcony and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The bed was very comfortable and I can be hard to please in this area. The shower was amazing. Great hot water and very spacious. While there are not many amenities on the property the location from a beauty standpoint was amazing. I’m so glad that I chose this property and did not allow the reviews to have me miss out on this blessing.

This was our third visit to this property but the first since hurricane Maria several years ago. The landscape around the property is beautiful however the hotel definitely needs work. I would say there is a management problem as the majority of the staff are hardworking and happy to help there just aren’t enough people to do the work. The first night we arrived we had to ask for extra sheets four times. There was only one person in the laundry room who could only do so much alone. There are gutters that need to be cleared and replaced and only a small ground crew to keep up. The kitchen crew created a lovely Christmas Day brunch but there was zero advertising so we were the only people who showed up. It was never promoted yet staff worked to create a full buffet of options that we enjoyed. Our room was nice and the beach is lovely and there are chairs and umbrellas. Pool has towels and bar service. If you are a Marriott regular do not expect this to be the same as a Renaissance on the mainland.

Carambola Beach Resort is a case study in what happens when a property is left unmanaged and poorly maintained. Any former reputation this resort may have had is no longer deserved. The deferred maintenance is impossible to ignore. Weeds are growing out of gutters, trash is allowed to accumulate in public areas including the lobby, pool, and beach, and nothing appears to be proactively maintained. The pool area is shockingly inadequate for a resort property, with only about 14 chairs total. There is no pool or beach bar service, no music, and no sense of hospitality or ambiance. Dining is equally disappointing. The breakfast and lunch dining area is consistently left dark because the lights are never turned on, creating a gloomy and unwelcoming experience. Operational failures are significant. On January 2, 2026, water was shut off to the entire resort for roughly eight hours, with no acceptable contingency or guest support. Transportation is another major issue. The resort is isolated, taxis are unreliable and often unwilling to come to the property, and resort-arranged transportation cannot be counted on. Guests should be aware that once you arrive, leaving can be difficult. The natural setting is beautiful, but the resort itself is neglected, poorly run, and not worth the cost or frustration. This property should not be advertised as a resort in its current condition.

Understaffed and lacks basic hotel management processes, take 1-2hrs once order food or drinks. They have contract with cruise ships and military ships so they get over run daily with 88+ cruisers, lack of beach & pool chairs and amenities for this size crowd. Breakfast runs out of coffee, silverware, cups, and buffet items constantly. Facilities are in need of serious repairs.

We arrived having seen the varied reviews. Yes, the place needs some maintenance and upkeep to make it a modern stunner, and the staff can find it challenging to meet customer needs. But please understand that this place is naturally stunning as-is, and the staff who we met were very friendly and accommodating. Carambola (means starfruit, and there are many active starfruit trees on the property) is located in a small cove surrounded by dramatically lush mountains. The views mirror Polynesia and Hawaii. You will benefit from a car to access other restaurants and beaches (rocky and rough at Carambola, though visually lovely), and we found the driving easy enough (even took a scenic detour that led us down the mountain on a very rough road that would have been treacherous in the rain but was happily adventurous in dry weather).
