Pelican Inn & Suites

Our anniversary trip was not supposed to involve cleaning our own hotel room! We were ‘informed’ after our first night that we should have known to ask for housekeeping. Really? So, we were told that we should make our bed and get our own fresh towels. This is not the usual experience we have had in the past when we stay in Cambria. The refrigerator didn’t work either and there was almost no hot water for a shower. We moved on to another hotel and had a MUCH better experience there.

We were driving up the Pacific Coast Highway as part of a vacation to the West Coast of the USA and booked a Fireplace Ocean View Junior Suite for one night at the Pelican Inn & Suites (we got a great price $260 through Booking.com). Having toured the West Coast on 4 previous occasions, we had never been to Cambria, but after careful research on-line we knew that it would offer a great coastal position and have plenty of shops and restaurants available. On entering Cambria, the main village is situated in a charming valley (creek) and has numerous restaurants, bars, antique stores and other shops offering gifts and general merchandise. The road continues through the village to the Ocean and the boardwalk, along which seafront hotels are situated. We arrived at the Pelican Inn & Suites, which presents as an attractive collection of two-storey buildings arranged around lush gardens, a small swimming pool and resident's car park. We parked and entered the lobby to be warmly greeted. We were advised that a light complimentary breakfast was available in the morning and that locally produced wine was available for tasting and purchase. We bought a bottle to take to our room - which was delicious. We then made our way to our suite. On entry we were in our split-level corner junior suite, with comfortable king size bed, wardrobe, ceiling fans, bedside tables, refrigerator, microwave oven and dressing area. The bathroom was spacious and had a whirlpool bath. Stepping down from the bedroom level, brought us into a lovely open-plan sitting room, with sofa, window seating area, occasional table, desk, chair, gas fireplace and French windows which opened onto our private balcony with two chairs and a table, we had a fabulous view of the Pacific Ocean, just across the Boardwalk. The fireplace was easily controlled with a switch on the wall and the ceiling fans effective. The suite also had an iron, ironing board, coffee machine and hairdryer. That night's sunset, viewed from our balcony, was utterly breathtaking (see photos), with locals saying that type of radiant display was dependent on cloud formations at sea - and only witnessed once or twice a year. We ate at the famous Linn's Restaurant (which specialises in dishes featuring their unique, family grown Olallieberries). It also has its own bakery and gift store on-site. We also enjoyed an after dinner drink at the historic Mozzi's Saloon opposite. Mozzi's was built in 1866 and is one of the last remaining 'cowboy saloons' left in California. We'd highly recommend the Pelican Inn & Suites for a delightful stay in Cambria. Having a direct Ocean view made our stay even more wonderful.

Our rooms were spacious, comfortable, quiet, and very clean, with beautiful views of the ocean, which was right across the street. Coffee and delicious breakfast breads were offered in the lobby each morning. A lovely boardwalk along the bluffs above the beach enticed us out for refreshing strolls every morning and evening. We have nothing but good things to say about the Pelican Inn, and we will be back (next time we will bring our little dog, too).
