"The bad outweighs the good"

4.0

Just returned from a 5 night mom/daughter trip here and I was pretty disappointed. I made the comment, “Hyatt, you’re better than this” many times during our stay. First, the room. We were in building 15 and the room was VERY underwhelming. Simple, basic furniture and all light brown and white. There was nothing “resort-like” about it. The doors to the toilet and shower were frosted glass, unless wet and then just glass, and not private if that’s something that matters to you. The slider to the balcony didn’t have an outside handle so it was tricky getting back in. But the bed was pretty comfortable and the pillows were fluffy. I’m not sure who painted the inside but Hyatt should ask for their money back. It was a mess. This is my 8th all-inclusive trip, first to this resort, and this place is by far the loudest I’ve ever been to! And not in a fun, everybody having a great time loud… the walking path that runs all along buildings 15 & 16 is utilized by the resort to move food & supplies from the front of the resort to the back. Resort staff are dragging metal carts full of plates and driving trucks and these red motorcycle carts up and down from early in the morning until late at night. I feel dramatic saying this but it’s constant, all day long! It’s like you pay for a little piece of paradise but the reality of resort operations slaps you in the face every few minutes. It was extremely distracting from the resort vibes we were hoping for. I have never experienced this at any resort before. We booked a sun club package but other than a lounge by the lobby and a private pool and beach area on the other side of the resort from our room, I’m not sure what the benefits of this was? I don’t feel we got our money’s worth for the upgrade but since those areas weren’t convenient for us we just didn’t use them. Maybe the sun club rooms on the other side would get more use out of them. We spent most of our time lounging by the main pool. There’s an entertainment group that did a good job trying to get people up and moving. We were here to relax so we skipped zoomba by the pool but they always had a group that looked like they were having a good time. There’s music at the pool with the volume being just right. It set the tone for a good pool day but you could still chat while lounging in the chairs. This was until our last day when a group came with their own boom box (yes, a boom box) and then it was battle of the speakers for a few hours until someone moved them to the other side of the swim up bar. There were also these yellow globs of stuff floating in the pool. Staff was out there trying to clean it but it was hard to keep up. I’m not even going to guess what it was but we definitely looked around before getting in to cool off. There’s no waitstaff walking around to get drinks either. You have to get those from the pool bar and they’re served in small paper cups that disintegrate quickly so drink fast. These are probably great for the environment but they don’t hold up to a frozen margarita. This resort definitely plays the towel game. All pool chairs were taken by 7-8am by towels with most people showing up hours later to use them so be prepared to send someone down early if you want one. On our last full day we dropped our stuff at our chairs, went to eat breakfast and came back to no umbrella. Those things aren’t easy to move so someone really wanted it. And it was just rude too but we didn’t let it ruin the day. The shaded beach chairs were also taken early but there were plenty of them available towards the back in full sun most of the day. They really pack the chairs onto the beach. It’s a little crowded. The beach is beautiful to look at here! We originally booked another resort in Punta Cana and then I learned of the seaweed issue that area was having so I switched our reservation here. If you’re coming during sargassum season, this beach is still beautiful and usable as long as you have water shoes. There are stones when you first enter the water. We didn’t go in very far but some people seemed to be having a hard time with it. Cell/data service was shotty for me even with using the resort WiFi and purchasing an international package from my provider. The resort map and restaurant info you’ll need is in a QR Code you’ll have to scan and I was never able to get it to open for me. Maybe it was user error but a little frustrating when you don’t have any idea where anything is. The restaurant/buffet waitstaff were pretty attentive and polite. Be nice to them and they’ll be nice to you. I do want to give a special thank you to Julia at the windows breakfast buffet. Her service was high level on our last morning there before catching our airport shuttle and even though our service otherwise was fine, I wish everyone had been just like her. The food was alright. I didn’t leave hungry but I also wasn’t in awe of what was offered. For Americans, you’ll find 1 or 2 familiar items and then plenty of other things if you want to branch out a bit. They just eat differently here and you’ll have to embrace it. We booked our transfers with Amstar and while we got to and from safely, it was frustrating. After getting off our flight and finding them in the airport, we were rushed outside and put into a van where we sat for 45 minutes. The driver said he was waiting on 2 others, closed the door and walked away. For the transfer back we were picked up at 9:55am for our 2:20pm flight. (There’s no negotiating with them on this) The resort is about an hour from the Punta Cana airport but even with check-in, security and walking through the duty free area, we sat at our gate for over 2 hours waiting for our flight. I recommend brushing up on your high school Spanish before coming here. Most of the staff didn’t speak any English and I don’t speak any Spanish so communication was tricky. We didn’t always get what we had ordered at dinner and ordering drinks at the bar was hit or miss too. But I was in their country and I don’t speak their language so I figured this was my problem, not theirs. But be prepared to just go with it when you need to. All in all, I think I paid more for this trip than what it was worth. Our location in the resort wasn’t good, the noise was a big bummer, the room lacked any wow factor, food was ok, beach was beautiful, pool had a decent atmosphere (minus the yellow stuff) transfers were frustrating and the staff was pleasant. Would I come back again? No. This would be at the bottom of the list of the 3 I’ve been to in DR. The group traveling back to the airport with us had friends staying next door at Dreams and said they wish they had been there.

"Good Experience, Great People"

10.0

We just returned from our stay at Sunscape and wanted to share our experience. The resort amenities were decent and the rooms had recently been refurbished, nothing extraordinary, but clean and comfortable. One of the highlights for us was the animation team, who kept our boys engaged and entertained throughout the trip. The only real downside for us was the beach. While it looked beautiful from a distance, the water was filled with a surprising amount of rocks and large boulders, making it quite uncomfortable and even risky to walk or swim in. Water shoes are definitely a must if you plan on going in. A very special shout-out goes to the amazing team at the Kaleidoscope restaurant. Hostess Nataly, waitress Yohanny, and manager Felipo went above and beyond to make every meal special. Their warmth and attentiveness truly stood out and made a big difference in our overall experience. Lastly, I’d like to thank the on-site medical team. I had an unfortunate incident during our stay, and they were incredibly responsive, professional, and caring. Their support was much appreciated. Overall, a pleasant stay with a few standout moments that made it memorable.

"Overall LOTS of really nice bits but a few niggly issues that seem easy to resolved - 3.5/5"

8.0

Just come back from a lovely 11 days at the Sunscape Dominicus La Romana resort - family of 5 with children aged from 7 to 15. Overall this was a lovely place - beaches are pristine but are a little packed with sun lounges. We stayed in 2 x connecting Sun Club rooms and found them both to be spacious, comfortable and well stock at the mini bar. We definitely utilised the Sun Club element of this being renewed daily. We only used the buffet once in the evening - for 10 other nights we ate at all the restaurants. Slightly unusual how you don't have to book (indeed you don't even get a wristband for the holiday) but we find this to our advantage by getting out to eat before 7pm - after 7.15pm ish the queues start to form. The food was delightful at all the restaurants we ate at. The buffet breakfasts were good at both the main one (Windows) and the Sun Club only one - no complaints here on either. The pool was a bit of a let down. a) it doesn't look very tropical or inviting - pretty standard and b) the yellowing element is real - do not take light or your best swimsuits. They try to clean it but it persists all day every day. Really strange they haven't fixed this (happens in both main pool and Sun Club pools). The entire pool complex needs an update and guess there's reluctance to do this. Sun beds - issue getting one - if you're after 7.30am by the pool there's no chance. They claim to check for beds that aren't utilised for a couple of hours but it's simply not true - we regularly saw beds vacant for 5-6 hours. As there's no cards for the towels either, we were certain people are putting down towels both at the beach and pool to keep options open. As mentioned the beach is beautiful - few boulders in the sea but nothing off putting. It does look crowded with the volume of beds. Staff were very friendly throughout - certainly no complaints here. Bars all very well stock and helpful. Ask for branded spirits and they serve it to you. Pool bar doesn't look that appealing - again part of the overall looking pool area. Grounds around the hotel all beautifully kept. The coffee shop is a real plus here - basically a Starbucks / Costa on site and it's all part of the AI which was great. Flies and wasps were everywhere - but we went in their tropical summer so we expected it. Overall for us gets a 3.5 / 5.

"Memorable Trip Thanks to Staff, Though Some Issues"

8.0

We had a good holiday at Sunscape Dominicus La Romana, though there’s definitely room for improvement. First, I want to sincerely thank two amazing maintenance workers — Cristian and Mavin. They were quick to respond whenever we had issues with the shower or hot tub. Their helpful attitude really stood out and made a difference during our stay. However, the Sun club pool, both the adult and family sections, was often not well maintained. It was disappointing to see that staff seemed disinterested, occasionally cleaning only certain parts of the pool while leaving others dirty. At times, we even noticed unsanitary items like used plasters and hygiene products in the water, which made swimming quite unpleasant. Another issue was tray and dish collection. On three occasions, we called after ordering food, and no one came to collect our trays — sometimes not until the next morning, when housekeeping finally cleaned up. This isn’t the level of service you’d expect from a resort of this caliber. That said, we did enjoy our excursions and loved exploring the beautiful surroundings. The food was average overall, with limited variety. One staff member who truly stood out was Ismalby, one of the bar attendants — friendly, professional, and always went above and beyond. In summary, while the resort has potential and we made some great memories, there are some key areas that need attention to provide a better guest experience.

We arrived at the hotel we were bounced around between different check in areas. After about 30min they told us we were going to be “bumped” to another property which was 15min away from where we were with the explanation that they had overbooked the hotel. We were not informed about this prior to arrival and were not given any opportunity to choose this option. After another hour of back and forth bouncing us between various people they allowed us to stay at the property we had originally booked which we agreed. They finally gave us keys to our room and informed us that they were going to “bump” the next people that arrived because of us. Our room was not an “upgrade” room even though we were classified as “SunClub” status. The facilities were ok but the food was the most atrocious and non ingestible we have ever been served at an all inclusive. The food options were extremely limited per meal. We were told we had premium liquor options but were never informed they were only available in the VIP lounge between 10a-10pm. Every other bar in this “inclusive” resort served what might be the most diluted alcohol from an unrecognizable brand. The $200 credit that was supposed to be offered to us had a ton of limitations and restrictions. The options were only available in set amounts but ultimately you’d have to pay to use the coupons. “All-inclusive” but seemed there was an unspoken rule of having to tip all the time at bars or you’d be ignored or given poor service.
