My wife and I recently spent two nights at the Best Western Galena Inn & Suites in Galena, IL. We were there for a short road trip and to visit friends. We signed in and booked the room using chain’s website; the cost with taxes was $247.76 for the two nights. (The reservation was cancellable - the cost would have been marginally cheaper if we picked the non-refundable option.) Galena is a touristy town in northwest Illinois known for its quaint shops, restaurants and connection with President U. S. Grant. The surrounding rolling landscape is gorgeous and a wonder when it is ablaze with fall foliage. Unfortunately, our trip was before the colors changed. The hotel is located on highway 20 about a mile east of Galena’s main drag, Main Street. It is flanked on one side by a gas station and a pizza restaurant on the other side. The lobby is basically a counter at one end of the seating area for the free morning breakfast. Check in was friendly and efficient. Although the hotel offers several suite options (Roman Palace anyone?), we opted for a regular room with a king bed. Our room (307) was on the second floor and faced the parking lot. TIP: If you are a light sleeper, you may want to request an even-numbered room to minimize Highway 20 noise. Although the HVAC system was loud enough to act as white noise. TIP: If you have heavy luggage or have trouble with stairs, you may want to request a ground floor room as the hotel does not have an elevator. (16 steps!) The hotel has a workout room, hot tub and indoor/outdoor pool, none of which we used. Our room was adequately sized and had a contemporary decor. Entering the room there was an open closet (with iron and ironing board), a shelving unit holding the coffee service, microwave and small refrigerator. Next came a tall padded bench (great for holding luggage), dresser with a large flat screen TV on top and finally a desk/ chair combo. Across the room was a large club chair, ottoman and floor lamp. A door at the end of the room led to the small balcony sporting two chairs and a small table. (Ground floor rooms led directly to small outside patios.) The bed came with four regular-sized pillows - my wife groused that they should have been king-size pillows. Regardless I found the bed and pillows to be comfortable. The bed was flanked by two night stands with lamps and each lamp had a power outlet. My side also had a combo phone/radio/clock unit, which surprisingly had four separate power charging cords. (See pic.) Alas, a USBC plug was not one if the options. A hair dryer was in the compact bathroom that sported a tub/shower combination. LaCoupe toiletries were provided, including pump bottles mounted in the shower: lotion, hand soap, shampoo and conditioner. Towels were very thin, but did include wash cloths. Water temperature and pressure in the shower were fine. The hotel offers a green option, involving reduced maid service. (See pic.) Breakfast was included with our room and was served in the lobby area. A selection of the usual cold and hot cold options was offered. My wife thought the make-your-own waffles were the best she’d ever had at a hotel. Overall, we found our room to be adequate and comfortable and it served its purpose. However, if we would return to Galena, for variety’s sake, we would opt to try one of the many other lodging options available in the area. Went to have a romantic anniversary trip with my wife but this hotel was so awful I wish i would have just stayed home. Checked in and the lobby area seemed okay. Went downstairs to the expensive under the sea suite and before we even got the the room I was already dismayed by the overflowing garbage can at the lower level entrance and the unsightly state of the hallway, most of the ceiling tiles were sagging from water damage and in bad need of replacement and multiple dehumidifiers were running in the hallway. Upon entering the room we were greeted by a trash can that had not been emptied always a great sign of the cleanliness of a room. The fish tank seemed rather dingy and there were multiple lights out in the room as well. Also don't count on the clock in the room for knowing what time it was as it was off by around 36 minutes and i could not find how to adjust it. The rooms main appeal are the 3 spa amenities, a sauna, jet tub, and a spa shower. Of these 2/3 were not in fully functional order. Only the sauna seemed to be working correctly, although it did take quite a long time for it to heat up but that very well could be normal operation for all I know. The showers main shower head, the one you would most likely want to use if you just wanted to take a regular shower, did not work at all. The jet tub had 2 functions, an air bubblier and traditional jets like a hot tub has. The air bubblier seemed to work fine but the jets did not work at all, such a disappointment especially since my back was in pain and i was looking forward to the relief the jet tub would give me. Decided to check out the pool area and was pretty disappointed with that as well. Every metal surface in there was rusting and it appeared as if cleaning was rarely done. In the 3 days we were there we never saw anyone else in the pool and the towel bin in there for used pool towels was half full and if the pool use rate is anything like we saw that means it likely hadn't been emptied in weeks. The pool itself was rather filthy mainly due to the fact that it goes into an outside portion that was full to the brim with fallen leaves. A Pool setup like this really needs to be gone over at least once a day to at least attempt to keep it presentable but it was very obvious that is not the case here. The whirlpool did work although we questioned if the timer for the jets was working properly as it seemed to run far longer that what we set it at but i can't confirm that since shocker the clock in the pool room wasn't functioning either. The continental breakfast also wasn't without its issues. Mainly in my opinion the warmers for the hot food seemed to be barely working as everything in them was luke warm at best and needed to be microwaved to be brought up to a proper temp. The coffee had the opposite problem, it was so hot it took at least 5 minutes to come down to a drinkable temperature and that's after i put 6-8 creamers in it. At least the waffle maker worked good and the waffles tasted fine. Upon checkout when I informed them of the issues with the room and my dissatisfaction I was accused that it was my fault the shower didn't work as i didn't use it correctly, spoiler i did use it correctly as every other spray/nozel worked besides the main one. As for my issues with the spa tub i was told that if i would have just let them know they would have fixed it right away. Uh huh sure you would have, you cant even empty trashes correctly and keep the pool looking clean so Im sure that on a weekended they would have jumped right on that. No apology was given and no discount offered. $1226 down the drain On a finalnote the location of this hotel is rather poor. It is on the east side of the town and there are only 2 restaurants within walking distance, a happy joes pizza and an irish pub in the other hotel by it. Everything else in the town is on the other side. Save your money and stay somewhere else.
