Sunscape Curacao Resort Spa & Casino

Run down resort in desperate need of a refurbishment. Staff were very hot and miss with their service. Pool bar not open at advertised times so meant a massive queue at the main bar. Lovely beach and cove area and great location close to mambo beach. Pool not cleaned properly so felt uncomfortable getting in it.

The staff at this resort is the best. Everyone was so helpful and willing to go the extra step. only one of the buildings has an elevator, which could be an issue. If you have mobility issues be sure to request a ground floor.

We chose this resort because we were looking for an AI hotel. To be honest after booking and reading the reviews I was scared. It's not as bad as everyone mentioned. We arrived on a Wednesday and got to the resort around 2:30pm to check in. They are strict with the check in time and we were 30 min early so we went to the buffet for lunch. We came back a little after 3pm and were told our room was not ready so we sat in the lobby and waited for a little bit. I believe it was around 4 and our room was ready. We were offered help with our luggage since our room was on the 3rd floor and there were no elevators which was nice. Rooms - The rooms could use a little renovation. We booked 2 rooms, Deluxe Ocean View and that is exactly what we got. We were given 2 rooms in the Pelican building 7317 & 7319 BOTH had an ocean view when you stepped out onto your balcony. I’m not sure any of these rooms in this category will have a complete ocean view from inside your room based on how the building is shaped but the balcony had a lovely view of the ocean and when you were inside your room, you can see the palm trees outside. We were a short walk from the main pool and restaurants. We had a tension rod in our bathroom that kept falling that we fixed ourselves. Our balcony door wouldn't close towards the end of our stay, but we spoke to the front desk and it was fixed. The grounds seemed to be well kept and the resort is situated nicely. This is not a 5 star resort and more of a glorified motel. It worked for us as we knew we were not booking a Sandals resort. Entertainment/Pool/Beach - The entertainment staff Cassie, Breezy and Candy man were great. They have a foam party on Saturdays and Sundays are a bit more chill by the pool but there are daily activities as well as night time activities. We did notice that the pool could have been cleaned in some spots. We did love that the pool overlooked the beach. There were loungers on the beach but not enough palapas for shade. We did find chairs under a palm tree and that provided shade. I was up early and on the beach by 7:30am every morning and all the palapas were already taken. By around 10am, most chairs were taken as well by the main pool. There are other beach areas by the Sun Club that are a bit more quiet if you prefer that. The main pool/beach played music but we enjoyed it. The beach was beautiful but rocky in some areas so bring water shoes. Closer to the Blue Water grill there were hardly any rocks so no shoes needed there. The water is crystal clear and you can snorkel right from the beach. On the other side of the Blue Water grill closer to the Sun Club, you can see a whole bunch of fish from the ledge without getting in the water. The resort also offers snorkeling equipment and will give you flashlights for night snorkeling. Restaurants - We ate at Oceana on our first night and I didn't love my meal. We realized that there is no kitchen and they have the food in chafing dishes and will grill the chicken skewers fresh. Their menu is very limited with only 3 entree options. They have Mahi Mahi, Salmon and Chicken skewers. I ordered the Mahi Mahi and it was dried out. The rest of the meal was tasty. We also ate in the Italian restaurant. You get a lot more options there and we found the food to be good. Our waitress was great! We ordered cappuccinos and they brought us black coffees, and when she came to our table and saw that, she immediately brought us the correct coffee and apologized. We also ate at the Hibatchi restaurant. You need to make a reservation here and can only make it the morning of starting at 8:30am. I tried to do that but was told they were booked completely full. I had gotten to the front desk by 7:30am and was told the reservation person comes in at 8am but to come back by 8:30am which I did. This was highly disappointing. After breakfast, we went back and spoke to Amanda who told us the person making the reservations had a family emergency and was off for the day so she made all the reservations for guests the day before. At this point I'm annoyed because based on the app, the restaurant can hold a capacity of 70 people so 70 people all knew the reservation person was going to be off and made their reservations the day before? I called this out to Amanda who heard what I was saying and assured me she would try to work something out. She definitely did!! She got us a reservation that night. She was awesome and worked hard to get us in. The Hibatchi has 3-4 stations that will hold maybe 13-14 people per station. There is also seating in the garden area so not sure it can hold 70 people for dinner especially if they don’t have enough hibachi chefs that day. Either way Amanda worked her magic and we were able to eat there. The food was good and we enjoyed it but I think they may have pulled a cook from the buffet in to help and man a station. It was still an enjoyable experience. We ate at the buffet for breakfast every morning. It is repetitive but served its purpose. They had an omelette station and they also made fresh eggs. The ingredients for the omelettes were the same everyday and our last day they ran out of ingredients for omelettes. They didn’t always offer bacon or sausage daily and it seemed to be available every other day. We had lunch here when we arrived while waiting for our room to be ready. It was ok and we did find something to eat. We also ate lunch at the Bluewater grill. The first time we waited over an hour for our meal as the cook was new. The 2nd time we went, it was better and the food was good. We did eat dinner out twice though. The restaurants aren’t big enough to hold all guests at the resort so If you are looking to have dinner around 5-6, there may be a little bit of a wait. I believe you can make reservations though. We never did since we ate dinner later on. We’ve had much better food at other AI’s but we never went hungry. Also, keep in mind that not all the restaurants are open everyday. Staff - Everyone was friendly and we never encountered anyone who was rude. My belief is that if you approach someone with kindness they will reciprocate and that is exactly the response we got. Even the towel person seemed to be a bit annoyed that I was bothering her for towels late in the day while she was watching TV on our first day. She still wasn’t rude though. Casino - I’m not a fan of casinos in the Caribbean but this one was nice with plenty of slot machines. It is open to the public and there are 2 entrances, one on the resort side that has a security guard and the other one entrance for the public. We loved Curacao and the beach was beautiful. This resort was a great place to just relax which was the intention of this trip and why we chose an AI. I didn’t love that this resort didn’t give you a bracelet upon check in to identify that you are a guest. The reason is that the casino is open to the public and although there is security by the door to the resort, there is no way of identifying a guest. I walked back to my room at night by myself and never felt unsafe though. Maybe this is something the hotel can consider in the future. I also didn’t love that there was no way to contact the hotel before your stay to request decorations for your room for a birthday celebration. It can be done upon check in though. You also can not request a certain building and will be given a room based on availability. A lot of the rooms are already arranged before your stay so it would be hard to change that unless there was something wrong with your room. I did see a lot of comments on social media about using the app for requests. That didn't work for me when I needed the balcony door fixed so we just went to the front desk. Overall, the food in some restaurants could use improvement. The buffet was just ok but was repetitive. Grounds were nice and I liked how everything was situated. Thai resort is not as bad as other reviews make it out to be. We would come here again as it was very budget friendly, and even if we went out to dinner a few nights, it is still cheaper than most other resorts.

We really enjoyed our stay. People complain about the food and I can say that iis not that bad. It is not the Notth American style food that people probably expect and although some of the dishes were not my style overall the food was fine. The beach is really nice and the scuba diving is very good. The entertainment was pretty impressive. We were part of Sunclub which gave us our own area and pool with its own bar. Amanda from the Concierge was absolutely amazing she worked so hard to ensure guests needs were met and pretty much all day and night everywhere we went we would see her talking to guests or just showing up to ask us how things were and if we needed anything. The crew that did the entertainment was also amazing. Don’t believe the bad reviews and go for yourself. Stayed at the Rif the previous year and by far preferred Sunscape
