"Meh"

6.0

Comparing this resort to the one other BP Luxury resort that I've been to (Ambar in DR), this property doesn't measure up CONS: - difficult to dine a la cart nightly even when booking 10 days prior to arrival - evident by how busy the evening buffet gets - Buffet is meh. DIY tacos are great but everything else isn't "luxury". Silly long lineups at the breakfast egg station - Beachfront is poor. The BP Tulum resort has all the best beach, I guess this resort is better if you're into pool lounging - Long line at the coffee shop PROS: - No fighting for beach chairs - Large network of carts for transfer between resorts My a la carte ranking: 1. Alux (If you can you should dine here 3+ times out of 7) 2. Maiko (Top 2 are both in the Sian Kaan resort, making up for the fact that it's deep in the jungle) 3. Fruitos del Mar 4. Ku'uk 5. Katok 6. Grand Tortuga (huge drop off once you're not in Luxury level restaurant) 7. The Smoke (why even bother with this restaurant) Some hints: - Travel by private transfer is 75-90m each way to Cancun airport - There is an working Santander ATM in the "Hacienda" area (where BP hosts the "Fiesta" - costs $$$ to attend event) - good to know in case their airport ATM is out of commission - Only place to lunch "beachside" is at Katuk Will try the BP Jamaican luxury next

"Be aware!"

6.0

Lots of improvements need to be made before it becomes part of the Hyatt group. First we were assigned a very dated and old room. It's a luxury resort but room which have not been updated are musky smelling and not attractive. We only got to hotel very late because we had an evening flight and we were not assigned a King bed room, 2 doubles instead but paid for a King room. Unless you request and updated room which the resort will charge an extra $100USD per day you are stuck with an old dingy room. Our AC was so loud, we had to turn it off the first night. Had to call maintenance to fix it. We were told the a la carte had to be booked in advance on the app, however because I was not checked in until I arrived it did not allow me to book the a la cartes. Once I arrived the app showed all a la cartes were booked for the entire week! We were celebrating a family birthday and hotel was only able to accommodate 2 nights of a la carte because we were to large a group. We even said we didn't mind splitting up. Regardless that's all we got and were stuck eating at the buffet for all our other meals. Food items in buffet are either mislabelled or not labelled at all. Otherwise, the food was good. On the seafood buffet night, they ran out to lobster, so if you didn't come early there was none to be had. No umbrella in our room and we got stuff in the rain one night. How do you call this luxury? I was not impressed and won't be returning.

"Poor service no curtains in room, just one big let down"

2.0

Poor poor food, impossible to book restaurants, rude staff who don’t care about their customers from front check in to guest experience, the only people we found nice were the drivers of the buggies

"Sixth time, disappointed."

6.0

Sixth time to resort. Still beautiful, great service, but food quality has definitely gone downhill. Food was always cold. Drinks continue to be watered down. Buffet unfortunately, 2-3 out of 5, except gourmet night Fridays, which was 5/5. Would go back, but definitely lower food expectations.

"Not good and total disappointment"

2.0

Currently here for vacation through January 24 and unless you are able to get the lousy app to work, don’t even try to go to any of the alacarte restaurants just get used to the buffet food. The worst is walking by the alacarte restaurants on the way to the buffet and maybe half the restaurant full, but they tell you they are fully booked. Booked Akumal with unlimited alacarte restaurants but can not get into any of them What a waste of money Attached is the picture of the “full” restaurant that they would not seat us at, maybe 1/4 of the restaurant is full

"Great Trip, Great Service!"

10.0

We just returned from a week trip to Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal. We had a wonderful time. Customers service was top notch. Shout out to Carlos and Angel at the swim up bar and Elizabeth who provided excellent service around the main pool. We ordered room service a few times and our food was delivered promptly. Our room was kept very tidy thanks to Josue. We had access to the neighbouring resorts throughout our stay, which kept us busy all week! Would recommend downloading the app and checking in 10 days in advance to book a la carte restaurants. We would definitely recommend visiting this resort!

"Beautiful resort - shady merchants in cities"

8.0

This was our fifth time at this resort and we love going there. We have found that some changes over the years aren’t how we’d like it to be but the food, staff and cleanliness can’t be beat. A few words of advice: Beds aren’t the best but if you speak to the hospitality's Manager they can get you a memory foam. Front desk and guest services said there were none. We went to playa del Carmen for a day - and it was showering so we took the courtesy umbrella - WARNING merchants must recognize the resorts umbrellas because we were approached 3 separate times by men claiming they work there as well. The first guy we believed and he encouraged my husband to pay visa - we fell for it 🙄. Tried running the card a few times - told us the system was down - we paid cash and left. Have a fraudulent charge of >$800 - no receipt so no recourse. Be smarter than us!

"Great hotel"

10.0

Great hotel beachfront, great entertainment team and food was varied and all of great quality. We stayed in 2 economy suites which were well maintained and comfortable. Wildlife in hotel was amazing and gardens were kept immaculate. You can use other hotels amenities and restaurant s and pools in complex.

"Great resort, and great for birding"

10.0

I stayed at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal in January 2026 and it was tremendous in every way. Safe, clean, good service and facilities, great food, cold beer, etc. But as a bird watcher and nature enthusiast, I was esp. impressed with the resort grounds and their "Eco-Bahia" program. There was a super diversity of habitats at and around the resort, And I was able to bird/hike on all of the other (4?) abutting Bahia Principe resorts easily, and this enriched my experience greatly. Late in my stay, I learned of the "Eco-Bahia" programs that are based out of Bahia Principe Coba, immediately to the west of Akumal. This is a great program. Kudos in particular to Bruno, a biologist with whom I did a birding hike at the end of my trip. Knowledgable, professional, skilled, and great English. He got me on several excellent bird species. I'll do more of that the next time.

"Inferior Quality and Service — Definitely Not a Five-Star Resor"

4.0

This is absolutely not a five-star resort. I’ll highlight just a few of the major issues we encountered, though I’m certain I’ve forgotten others — there were simply too many. Let’s start with the food: mediocre at best. The service was consistently subpar. I had to request slippers five times — four times over the phone and once in person with the manager at the front desk — before they were finally delivered the next day. The room floors are cold ceramic, making slippers a basic necessity. The rooms are dated, and ours — like others in the hotel — lacked blackout curtains, making it difficult to sleep past sunrise. Most of the beach is rocky, and the small portion that is swimmable is, unsurprisingly, overcrowded. The hotel hosted a New Year’s Eve buffet dinner with a 9:00 p.m. reservation. However, due to a long line, we weren’t seated until 9:20. By 10:00, they stopped serving food and drinks and began clearing tables — including ours — even removing unfinished drinks. So much for a festive New Year’s celebration. While the property has multiple pools, none are heated. Given the cooler winter weather, the water was uncomfortably cold and unusable. Due to the poor service, we decided to check out a day early. Shockingly, the front desk manager refused to process our early departure unless we would sign a document stating we had no complaints and would not pursue any further claims. Why would the even have such a document.....
