Great place
Amazing location with views over the mountains. They have a very short walk up to the rocks where you can see the sunset over the mountains. Restaurant was good with a reasonable amount to offer. The common area has a lovely big fireplace and lots of jigsaws and games to fill the time. The cabin we stayed in was a bit tatty but was fitting with the mountain vibe. The walls were paper thin though so if you get noisy neighbours then you arent getting a good nights sleep.
We had a great experience staying at big meadows lodge. You have to remember that you are staying in essentially wilderness so this isn't going to be a luxury resort. Going into it with that frame of mind our stay was super enjoyable and we loved every minute! Our room was very nice if a little spartan but the water pressure in the bathroom was really great and the room itself is very clean. It is extremely quiet at night and you can hear other guests but not badly. The food in the lodge dining room was really good and reasonably priced. Our server was nice and attentive and the service was quick. It's really cool to be able to look out the window while you're eating and see the mountains. We didnt check out the taproom but we heard good things from other guests. There's a lot of nice overlooks on skyline drive and down into the town of Luray there's a lot of activities to do. You are in the middle of the mountain though so getting on and off takes time. Average drive down for us was about 30 minutes but there is a gas and convenience store right near the lodge with a bunch of stuff you may need or want. Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and recommend it to anybody who wants to get away for a little bit!
We had wanted to stay in one of the lodges since we first discovered them in one of our several trips down Skyline drive over the last 5 years. It was not as charming and majestic as we’d thought. The beds were massively uncomfortable. Front desk staff was curt to borderline rude when asking simple queries. They were also completely unaware of NPS programming offered at the location. Some waitstaff were apathetic as well. Food was pretty good; but we’d eaten there before.
Never got to stay here because we were not sure anyone would be available to check us in with a late arrival.
I highly recommend the Big Meadows lodge and a trip to Shenandoah National Park, VA. We loved the scenic views and hiking trails. Very green trees and lovely meadows surround it. Each part is worth visiting!!
Check in was delayed by 45 min - lots of ppl waiting to get into their rooms.
Mountain views and quick access to hiking trails. Having dining options on location was a big plus as was the ability to have your dog with you! Food was a little hit or miss but I had an excellent trout dinner and a burger for lunch, both outstanding. My husband had the cobb salad at lunch which was also very good. The rooms were clean but a bit dated, which was as expected at an historic lodge.
We had a very enjoyable stay at Big Meadows Lodge. The room was cozy and comfortable. Beautiful grounds around the lodge and views from the main lodge deck. Restaurant on site was very good, affordable and convenient!
