"Big Meadows, Shenandoah National Park, Va"

Stayed at Big Meadows Lodge and Hiked. Used this place as a centerpoint for other activities. We stayed three nights. We took a lot of pictures.

Perfect for a weekend get away! Friendly staff. On site restaurant was perfect. The menu really accommodates everyone and the servings size is huge!! We booked two rooms. One room was on the ground floor where the air conditioner from above leaked down making it impossible to sit on the 'porch' area in front of the room. It was not in front of thr door so only a minor inconvenience. The beds were too soft in one room and too hard in the other (probably should have swapped rooms with our friends). All in all, would stay again.

"Awesome Place "

10.0

Food is really good, the hostess Amanda was amazing. My daughter just recently started a gluten free diet. We asked if they had any bread that was gluten free, she said yes we do and went to back and came out with it and jam. No charge, i couldnt believe it. Place was awesome, we will be going back next year.

"Just OK"

Pros- cozy, rustic feel. Great room next to dining room had beautiful views. Food was excellent, especially the trout. Location perfect for hiking. Great presentation of astronomy by park ranger in meadow down the road from lodge. Cons- Bathrooms very outdated, only 3 TV channels, no wifi. Views from room not as pictured in website. Views obstructed with trees. Windows overlooking views in great room filthy. Chairs in great room broken and worn. Dinner took 90min to come out!

"You are Paying for the Location, Not the Accommodation"

4.0

The location is lovely - the hotel room is well-below what was expected for the price. We spent three nights in a “preferred room with two queen beds” located in the Doubletop Building that was built in 1959. Our room had A/C (the rooms with two queen beds have A/C), Keurig coffee maker, hair-dryer, TV, and small fridge (that is not mentioned on their website). There was no phone in the room and no WiFi – WiFi worked well in the main lodge building. It had two outside chairs and small table. The beds were comfortable. Unfortunately, our room needs refurbishing: the fan had visible wires showing, the bathroom door was warped, peeling paint on the bathroom trim, bathroom exhaust fan didn’t work, the toilet seat was loose and moved around when seated, and a bedside lampshade was cracked/damaged. There doesn’t appear to be much insulation between rooms since we could hear conversations and people walking around (from upstairs); and we could hear some sort of “plumbing” noise regularly throughout the night. I recommend sleeping with some white noise going in the background. Bottom line is that the room felt old and needs remodeling. It is not worth the $400+/night currently listed on their website – if you can get the room when on sale, it makes it more palatable. We had good meals at the lodge’s restaurant, and the staff were helpful and friendly.

The description on Expedia is not accurate. Traditional room means no AC or TV. Not a big deal unless its 100 put and humid in mid summer.

What do you get for a King Size ($239) Room? First of all, you get a surprise: we were never forewarned about the $30 National Park entrance fee. (Not all national parks have fees). Room had an expired fire extinguisher (over a year!). 3 screws were sticking up on threshold. Total safety hazard. Ceiling has water damage San Quentin style bathroom (broken sink light, holes in the concrete walls, no hot water, broken shower spout, no arrows for water temp) Unreliable Wi-Fi in the rooms Nightlight from Wi-Fi glare Bad outlets: several did not work. TV with no directions how to work Ants and cockroaches Wet fire wood, no matches, no kindling, broken fire tools (swiveling poker handle) Humming refrigerator 5 sets of towels for a double occupancy No bottled water in rooms
