The cottage I stayed in was roomy and lovely. The service was wonderful and the food at the restaurant was superb. I would definitely stay there again.
The hotel was obviously very upmarket in it's day but is very 'tired' and 'dated' and certainly did not reflect the reputation and cost of the restaurant! Whilst the breakfast was very good ..tea served in a teapot with broken lid somewhat let it down! Very quiet, in fact saw no other guests, the reception staff were eating behind the front desk (both on checking in and checking out), the bar area certainly needed a clean and polish but overall a complete decoration must be on the cards to restore what has the potential for a beautiful riverside hotel in a beautiful part of the county.
As in other reviews, we found the hotel to be rather tired, although we still found the cottage room to be charming. However, we were slightly disappointed when we had a drink in the bar. The waitress had no interest, served the drinks and disappeared. If we had wanted another drink we would have had to go searching for her. No customer focus at all. It's also very difficult having to choose your breakfast the day before. And then when we appeared for breakfast the next morning we were not greeted and sat for quite a while before going to reception to let them know we were there. Overall, a charming hotel let down by its staff.
Lovely hotel, very characterful. Friendly helpful staff. Delicious breakfast. I didn't eat in the restaurant at night because (although it sounded fantastic) it was too expensive on the work budget. I'd definitely revisit again for a personal holiday visit, it would be a great place to stay for the weekend.
