Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Wanderers

Great hotel! Spacious, comfortable and clean.

Wifi ridiculously slow, no hot water, no water pressure. Rooms are tired and whole hotel needs an upgrade. On the plus side its well located!

Excellent location for my purposes. Excellent parking, check in and check out. Food in restaurant average. Very good value for money, with well equipped room - fridge, work desk, tv, full bathroom, lots of cupboards, good block out curtains, good (small) safe, and very quiet. They do not even have a 'PING' when a lift arrives. ONLY PROBLEM - terrible wireless internet in the bedroom (room 509). Signal in corridor 100%; NO signal at the desk in the room. Could not do whats app. Could not do basic emails without signing on repeatedly. Reported this twice at reception - no reaction (probably because the signal near the lifts and in the corridor is so good).

Downstairs lobby area is very nicely decorated with great furniture and a lovely pool area, however the upstairs bedrooms don’t match, with outdated bathrooms, tiny bedrooms and just not what I expect from a 4*hotel - one tiny hand towel between two, one drinking glass between two, one plug socket, no bathrobes, etc. We did have an excellent stir-fry buffet dinner when we arrived and the chef and staff were great, however when we came down for breakfast we were greeted by miserable, downcast, staff who were slow and disinterested- tables were not set, had to ask about 5 times just to get a coffee and the food was not great. We felt the mood came down from management and the staff were unmotivated and probably treated poorly. We did, however have one very helpful young man who served us with bar snacks and coffee in the lounge before we left - nothing was too much trouble for him. We had just left the Hyatt Regency at Rosebank and couldn’t help but compare so we were disappointed in general with the overal space, the rooms and breakfast in particular.

Relatively average no lounge for Marriott rewards card members though, you’d only get points

Average. Nothing special. Food was good. Gave me a twin when I booked a double. Didn’t ask me for credit up front so was denied breakfast on 1st morning

Very comfortable hotel. Well located, near Sandton, near freeway, near Melrose Arch. Room is not large, but very quiet and comfortable. Service is very friendly and efficient. I've stayed at Protea Wanderers many times and it's always nice to be welcomed back. Drinks at the pool at the end of the day was very relaxing with a view over East Johannesburg. Plenty of parking. Breakfast is ample. I never ate dinner there as Melrose Arch complex is just down the road with a wide variety of restaurants. No hesitation to recommend this hotel for a business stay.

Unable to book room service meal to my room account. Left stranded at Rosebank for 100 minutes despite phoning 4 times for the hourly courtesy bus. Phoned at 2.50pm. Not collected until 4.30 then had to go via Sandton before arriving back at hotel at 5.00pm
