OUTRIGGER Kona Resort and Spa

What a disappointment this hotel was! We stayed for one night at the end of our Hawaiian vacation. I have no idea how this hotel has such high reviews on trip advisor. I paid more for this room than any hotel I have ever stayed in, and it was one of the worst rooms I have seen. Be prepared for a long check in line. Apparently the key card maker was down so each guest had to be walked to their room by security, then wait in their room for security to bring the key. I do want to say both the bellman and security were very pleasant. We dealt with two incompetent front desk staff, one who was nice enough but kept us for about 30 minutes talking about her family ( every minute counts at this price!), and the other who was just plain rude. We had a bay view room. The view was nice but the room was dirty. The carpet was soaking wet because the refrigerator hadn’t been cleaned and was leaking water. The paint was peeling on the walls and the bathroom was kind of moldy. Not a truly renovated room at all, more like a motel 6. Even worse when we opened the drawers there was sexual stimulation pills and tequila bottles. Imagine if we had a child with us who had found these first!! Very disappointed. Food and bar service is slow. Some bar tenders will basically ignore you while helping the locals and their friends right away. The breakfast buffet was sub par and the hostess was also very slow. I would encourage Outrigger to reinforce that guests appreciate when staff move with a sense of urgency. I reached out to management for a full refund. They offered me half and have been ignoring me ever since. This was an extremely disappointing experience.

The hotel is nice and staff is very friendly. The pool is really pretty and ocean views beautiful. A few issues. 1)When the hotel is busy, there is little to no hot water for the shower. 2)The WiFi is terrible 3) there was a cockroach in the bathroom. This only happened once but still gross 4). Didn't realize there is no beach at the hotel. (My fault should have researched that more).

Nu'u was our guide to explain the history of Hawaii. He had excellent presentation skills and was well informed.

Staff was great. Faith at the coffee bar was fantastic. Resort is really nice but maintenance wasn’t great. We often came back to room service cleaning up our room at 6pm. The food at the restaurants was outright bad. Location is okayish. You have to drive even for food.

For the price, I would recommend renting a condo. Unfortunately, this is the only hotel resort in this area. We booked the room based on an internet special offered in December. We added a 3rd night, and were offered a price lower than the internet special. The room booked was for an ocean view. When we arrived to the room, it was a partial ocean view, and we overlooked a park that was under construction. The hotel check in associate was extremely accomodating, and offered us a second option, which was also a partial ocean view. We also wanted a couch in the room consistent with what my husband and I had when we stayed at the hotel in May 2025. We were sent to two more rooms, none of which had a couch although it appeared that way in the computer system (no fault of front desk). Only one of the rooms had a true ocean view. So be aware, that what they consider to be an ocean view, in most cases is a partial ocean view at other hotels. Parts of the hotel is under construction, and a lot of the grounds are blocked off. There is no discount being offered, and no warning was given that this was the case. Both the quiet and family pools were very cloudy. Either the filters were not working properly, or need to be upgraded. We had access to the free breakfast and cocktails and appetizers. This would be a good option if you have a family to feed and are trying to economize for breakfast. But the breakfast is consistent with what you get at a homewood suites or double tree. The appetizers were also nothing special. Before the air conditioner turns on, there is a high pitched (almost sounds like an alarm) sound that occurs for 10 minutes prior to the air conditioner turning on. We chose this location because it is close to great snorkeling that you can do from the shore. And you can walk to get to the boat for whale watching, snorkel tours, kayaking and the night time manta ray snorkeling. We knew that restaurants outside of the hotel are limited on that part of the island. If you are looking for a better resort experience at a comparable price I would recommend Waikoloa Village. However, it is far from where you catch boats to go snorkeling, or whale watching, so that is a tradeoff. We did rent a condo close to the Outrigger, and most have a pool and some have an ocean view, with the added benefit of having rooms, kitchens and living areas. They are often the same price or less than you pay at the Outrigger. You could also take advantage of ResortPass to get the best of both worlds and hang out at various resorts for the day.

Faith at Piko coffee Bar was amazing. Friendly, and knowledgeable. 5 STARS

I booked an ocean view room with a balcony. When we arrived, the room was a bay view and the very noisy parking lot. I asked the front desk, and they said that I should have booked an ocean front room, but I could move for an additional charge, and it would be by the pool. The rooms were supposed to be newly renovated, but the bathtubs already had the coating peeling and there was mold in the grout, the walls were painted a dark teal and showed every gross bodily excrement. I ordered a ribeye steak at the Piko restaurant, and it was so tough and yet fatty at the same time and was about 1/4 inch high and $47. The manager did remove it from our charges. The pools looked murky. I was afraid to get in. The food at the Feast and Fire Luau was also an extreme disappointment.

This is a great spot for families and smokers. Our room was clean but the rest of the resort could use a serious upgrade.
