The Phoenix is an elegant historic hotel beautifully designed with well appointed interiors featuring amazing interior spaces, antique furniture, statues and wall hangings, the sumptuous buffet breakfasts features Balinese percussion music and the reception staff accommodatingly made every effort to enhance my stay, it is one of the best hotel experiences I have ever enjoyed, John Mark

The Phoenix Hotel is beautiful and luxurious, with an open, airy feel and Asian art all over the place. The pool is very pleasant and well-used (including by my wife and me), and I also got a nice massage. Our room was nice, with a small deck overlooking the pool--though the hotel grounds are so extensive that it took a while to get there from the entry. The A/C and shower in our room worked well, but there was a problem with the shower pipes that created a loud noise and required periodically adjusting the knobs (sometimes in the middle of the night). The staff was over-the-top friendly, but the service itself was uneven. For example, the staff did not replace our towels and bath mats even after specific requests. (We took lots of showers due to the heat and humidity, so the towels needed replacing.) The included breakfast was extensive in a pretty setting, but the focus was on quantity over quality. One could find decent things to eat, though, whereas dinner was flat-out bad with slow service (though slow service seems common in Indonesia). We ate dinner at the hotel our first night and never again. We also were disappointed in the location. We thought we would like being near Malioboro St., but only visited it once and felt no need to go back. Instead, we went across town every night to an area with better restaurants. So although the Phoenix Hotel overall was very nice, we would probably try somewhere else if we ever went back to Yogyakarta.

Hotel had very nice common areas, gave the place alot of character. Location also good, near to the train station and a short car ride to Maliboro shopping street. Cleanliness in the room was quite poor. E.g. stains on the bed sheets and towels, towels were grey. Toilet lacked proper maintenance. Wobbly tiles, musky smell from the water when you turn on the shower, low water pressure in the toilet and shower. Service at the front desk and restaurant was slow. The language barrier made it hard to communicate. Concierge was not helpful and hard to reach. Spa was 3/5 in terms of size, aesthetic, and availability. Hard to believe it's a 5-star hotel. Stayed at another Yogya hotel 5min from Phoenix Hotel and that was a much more pleasant experience.

Lovely old colonial style hotel. Good staff, plenty of variety for breakfast. Close to main street in Yogya, easy to walk, inexpensive to use a taxi.

The hotel is in a beautiful historic property with an amazing pool and breakfast. The rooms need updating because of wear and tear but since the hotel is located righ in the center of town, it is very convenient to come and go.
