"Refused to Refund of my Deposit"

4.0

This is as much a review of Booking.com, as it is of the property; however Booking.com wouldn’t accept my confirm # and pin to review the property there (as > 28 days had elapsed) . I made a reservation for this property, for a 3 night’s stay, in early August, 2022. As my trip was for a annual family event, I made the reservation in May, far in advance of the event. Upon getting a confirmation from Booking.com, the property’s online agent, the property took a deposit of $100.13, on the credit card which I used to guarantee the reservation. Nine days before my arrival at the property, due to a change of plans, I canceled the reservation online (on 7/27/2022) and received a confirmation from Booking.com that the cancellation was free of charge (being 9 days in advance and well within the 3 days req.). By mid-August, the property had denied they owed my deposit back. Booking.com (Bk.com) said they contacted the property - the story they got from the property was totally untrue or confused me with another person - and Booking.com said either I’d get my deposit back in 24 hrs from the property, or in 48 hrs from Booking.com. I initiated a dispute claim with the credit card company, after waiting for Booking.com, because it became clear they were just “jerking” me around. Submitting this claim to the bank card company was not without hurdles, but in the end, the bank card company sent me a form letter (covering 95% of cases, no doubt) denying my claim, because when disputing the charge, 90 days had passed since the “purchase” (i.e. in May when I made the reservation and the deposit was taken). What purchase one might ask?? But clearly I was out of luck with the bank too and the property unfairly got away with taking $ 100 from me.

We had a suite. The room needed some TLC. The walls and ceiling had a lot of patchwork and mismatched paint. My biggest disappointment was the breakfast. I have never stayed in B&B that had only continental breakfast. Not only was it mostly fruit it was self serve. The biggest shouck was the make your own waffel maker like they have at chain hotels. Definitely not the experience we paid for. Very disappointed.

"Sorry excuse for a B&B"

2.0

My husband and I booked this B&B for one night during our long road trip back home from Boston. For starters, when we arrived I walked into a creepy empty parlor with no one to greet me. I had to go through the dining room trying to find someone and knock on the kitchen door to finally reach the owner. She was sitting in the kitchen and seemed perturbed. I felt like I was disturbing her. She offered me the key to our room and gave me very poor directions on how to get to it. She didn't offer to show us to our rooms which is generally the hospitality you receive when staying at a B&B. I went back to the main house to ask for some recommendations for dinner in the area and again felt like I was imposing. The family was sitting down to dinner and when I asked for stemware and a bottle opener I was instructed by the male owner that they where in the dinning room in the china cabinet which I went to in a dimly lit room. No help from the owners. Hospitality is not their forte. The room we stayed in , the Country Club room was outdated and smelled musty. The wall unit A/C was loud and we had a difficult time staying asleep throughout the night. In the morning my husband went to the dining area for breakfast. It was more like a continental breakfast with cold items and hard boiled eggs. Nothing like what is shown in the pictures from their site. Most B&B we have been to pride themselves on their home cooked breakfasts. You won't find that here at Elk Forge! My advice to anyone traveling through the area, stay somewhere else. Don't waste your money on this place.

A nice quiet B&B, breakfast was great, our room was on the 3rd floor, so we got some exercise. We would have liked to speak to someone when leaving to discuss some minor issues, but nobody was around to speak to.

The Elk Forge Inn has beautiful grounds. The house is decorated beautifully from it’s time period. The room was ok. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were flat. It wouldn’t cost much to correct the problem. There’s complete privacy at the property. My mom and I stayed a couple of nights and felt like we had the place to ourselves. The breakfast was minimal. All and all we had a nice stay. I would definitely come back again but think the experience would be disappointing for frequent B &B travelers.

1750 farmhouse. Owners took over property in 1981 and, frankly, I don't think anything (other than breakfast room) has been update for forty years. Venetian blinds did not operate well and were hard to close (so you do not awaken to June sunshine at 5 AM). Hot water took forever (presumably to come up from basement in boiler), was tricky to operate, and never really got "hot". The tub was, an old elevated cast iron one, VERY difficult to get in and take a shower in. Room locks difficult for old fingers, probably from 1950s or so. Breakast was not up to BnB standards; it was a buffet with only 'one' cooked dish - waffles - i.e. no eggs, mostly cereal, muffins and bagels. Freshly cooked waffles looked interesting but eggs and prepared food is what we like in a high-end BnB. High point is the many tables indoors and out with the morning sun streaming in. Ice cold milk offered with coffee means, if you take milk in your coffee, your coffee will be "not hot" - i e closer to room temperature. Low point was the rule "$1000 fine for bringing in your own alcohol" and when we tried to buy house wine, the wait was...wait for it...a full thirty minutes. Also, the restaurant the staff recommended - Amalfi, an Italian place - was the worst meal of the year, for us.
