"Away from everything but not quite!"

8.0

We booked this, last minute and on a whim and were told that the blue room was the only room available for our stay at €100 per night. This is a true 'retreat' perched on top of a hill overlooking Setubal. The standard of the rooms is superb, spotlessly clean, kitchenette, microwave, fridge, 2 ring hob, Telly and satellite (2-3 English channels). The owner brings you fresh bread in the morning and puts ham, cheese, eggs, OJ etc in the fridge and keeps the coffee jar topped with ground coffee for the filter coffee machine. Our room was cleaned, beds made etc every day. Excellent attention to detail. There is a shared pool (about 10m long) with sunbeds with amazing views. The journey into Setubal in mid July is best done by a/c'd car as it's about a mile down a very steep hill. Then you're in the main street with shops and restaurants nearby. Ha Mar ao Luar could do even better by providing a book of helpful information about the hotel, local restaurants, tours, walks, biking routes, local taxis etc, etc in each of the rooms. Also, there is a large verandah, which we understood to be available to everyone to use, so a few games, table tennis table etc wouldn't go amiss! In summary, the great thing about this place is the fact that it's not full of foreign tourists, just real Portuguese people paying Portuguese prices to get by.

"7 days of heaven"

10.0

Well where do I start, I was nervous at first booking this windmill for a week but from the second we arrived the welcome was outstanding from Maria and the family. Showed us to our rooms, told us everything about the area and surroundings with any questions asked were answered with excitement and knowledge. Girlfriend ( now engaged) was blown away with the welcome, the windmill and the view. Lovely 10 minute stroll down the hill to heaps do fresh fish restaurants and bars. You could walk up the hill on way back but it's only €5 to get back to hotel. Best beaches I have been to for ages which is a short ferry ride (€2 15 mins). White sands with clear blue sea. Every where friendly, clean and helpful. Oh check out Sado cruises as we hired a yacht for a day where the friendly funny captain cooked for us and of course some wine involved was great. Can't fault this place at all apart from our break was to short. Will return for sure. Well done Ha Mar ao Luar and team Marcus and Bethan

"Great place"

10.0

We stayed there 1 night, whilst it was a bit complicated to find the room was very nice and the complete team were very accomodating. I personally would rather consider the ha mar ao luar more of a b&b than a hotel. Cannot fault it though.

"Stunning view"

10.0

Quiet place, up in the Hill, with a stunning view. We stayed in the windmill and were delighted: fireplace, nice living room, wonderful bedroom upstairs and we woke up with the sunlight, overlooking the ocean and fresh bread at the door. You need to self-cater and bathroom could be bigger, but then you can sit outside and have breakfast in the sun, with a great view to Troia, the water and the hills. There is also a swimming pool but we preferred going to the lovely beaches, which are just a 10/15 minutes drive.

"Don't stay anywhere else! But book the windmill."

8.0

Booked this through I- escape having spent ages looking for a place in France and how glas I am that we did! Haven't done self catering in a while but we always eat t anyway so thought why not. Breakfast is delivered to your door everyday in a bread bag and tou have coffee, juice etc in the fridge. We were also given fruit but the market in town is so good so why not go there? We had the pool to ourselves most days and the people who run the place live there and are lovely and helpful. There was a mix up on bookings so we couldnt have the 'wood shed' but stayed in the windmill which was unbelievable...views to die for and cool as well. The staff moved our luggage after 3 days to the woodshed which was cute but not as lovely as the mill. Setabul has a micro climate so it is at least 5 degrees C hotter than the Lisbon coast so no air con in the rooms (fans only) was an issue for me as the weather was unseasonally hot- 38 degrees . Out of season there would be no problem and the mill is cooler anyway. Restaurants in town are amazingly good value and the food is brilliant...my meat eating husband ate fish 5 nights out of 7! You must have a car if you are staying here....too far to walk to town and certainly too far to walk back !

"Hut hideaway from it all"

8.0

This was the place for a week of silence, solitude and swimming. I stayed in the casinha, a small wooden hut which was like a Med version of Heidi’s house. A little balcony on stilts, a perfect country kitchen and a huge, endlessly cosy bed and shutters that banished the bright Portuguese sunlight. The kitchen is well kitted out with open shelves stacked with a delightful crockery set which featured dragonflies on sunny yellow china. Each morning the staff leave a bundle of fresh bread rolls hung in a patchwork bag on your door, and tidy up your room replenishing fruit juices and jars of raspberry jam – but pretty much you’re left totally alone. The property is located a brisk twelve minute walk down hill from the industrial town of Setbubal. It’s hardly pretty but the main stretch of restaurants is good for people watching, just make sure you don’t even think about heading out for dinner until 9.30pm as it’s deserted, and leaning towards depressing, before then. A lovely spot.

"Beautiful self-catering on the hill-top"

8.0

We stayed in 'the windmill' in May - and it was windy! A beautiful, quiet place to stay, with a great view, and very helpful landlady. Ignore 'breakfast provided' unless you're happy with bread and jam - you're self-catering anyway, so why not treat yourself to delicious fresh produce from the market in Setubal, at the bottom of the hill (closed Mondays). We hired bikes from bikeiberia, but others rent cars - we could have managed quite well with taxis too.

"Somewhere different - great for views"

6.0

This property is set on a hill, where it includes an old converted windmill - in which we stayed. The result is, it's windy ! There is a semi-sheltered pool, but no other communal area. The mill was VERY original - tastefully decorated with knick-knacks, well equipped for self-catering if needed, and a romantic upper floor for the bedroom, with views through 2 windows (4, if you include the en-suite) across the countryside. It's draughty when windy, but there is a woodchip-burning stove if the evenings are cold. The other rooms seemed to vary from "ordinary" to "shack" - we were privileged. Plus points: - great view across the bay Setubal and the peninsula opposite - reasonable pool area - windmill is cosy and romantic - good location for driving into Setubal for meals - walks in the hillsides around Minus points: - owner was friendly but the staff not - no communal area other than the pool - only nice on sunny days - Breakfast was provided in the fridge, with fresh bread and a flask of lukewarm coffee brought to the room at 9:15 (too late for early risers).

"Splendid boutique-style bungalows"

10.0

This place is simply magical. From the individually styled semi-bungalows with spectacular view and enchanted garden to the bread at the doorstep morning service, finally to the cool poolside, this place has it all. It is an absolutely recommended location for a short and long stay. Each room has a unique style to it and each feels like a summer home. I still dream about Sitting in the garden among the flowers, opening a bottle of viño verde and feeling perfectly happy.
