Minshuku Suhara

The most authentic stay we had in Japan. Felt like living in the house from My Neighbour Totoro. I'm pretty sure we were the only tourists in the entire village. The street with traditional houses isn't as long as in other post towns, but it feels like staying among locals. Even though it seems remote, there is a big supermarket and a 24h 7-eleven within 5 minutes walking.

Old traditional house. Very large house in quiet village. Traditional furnishing. Nice to cook traditional tea in evening on coal fire in the middle of living room. 7 large bedrooms where you sleep on floor. Very nice house owner who explained how everything worked via google translate

This accomodation was simply incredible, like sleeping in a museum. A well maintained Edo period house right on the Nakasendo! Like stepping back in time. The shower was great, there was even a wodden tub for onsen. There is a 711 about 5mins walk away to get dinner or drinks. The bedroom had AC which was awesome

The mattresses could be a bit thicker or better.

I have stayed at hundreds of accommodations in Japan and throughout the world, and this minshuku is among the most special lodging expreriences I have ever had. Don't miss out on this rare opportunity to stay in this clean, comfortable, spacious and unique house.

We really enjoyed this experience. Such a good opportunity to enjoy an edo home. We had a car so we could explore local area, although the train station was close by.

Rental is actually for whole property which has 4 tatami rooms each can sleep 2 ie. 8pax. I was travelling alone and this was the only available property that I could book at a price very reasonable for 1 pax so I book whole place. Can you imagine if 8pax stayed here. There’s a commingle family room with a fireplace with hot water flask and free green tea. 2 toilets and 1 bathroom with a solo onsen, also a fully equipped kitchen and washing machine. Absolutely huge place and well equipped clean and well maintained ancient little Japanese old style house. Well stocked Supermarket is 10 min walk away and 3 restaurants. I went to a small Izakaya place run by an old friendly couple who guess I was staying at this Minshuku. Couldn’t read his Japanese menu on the wall so I ask him to omasake my meal, had a great value for money stay

It is a nice, clean and peaceful place with great facilities in a beautiful area.

We were three adults with four children and booked the place accordingly. The owner had just four small sized futons ready for us. On the question if we could use a futon more for our children, he wanted to charge us a hefty sum of ¥7,000 more per night and futon...
