This place is amazing! If you want an authentic experience in a traditional old house, this is a must. I booked this house for my husband and me as an overnight stay while walking the Nakasendo Way. The host speaks very little English, but Google translate is everyone's friend, and he was super helpful. I loved the wooden bath - so relaxing after a day hiking.

Nothing. Everything was great.

"A traditional Japanese home to yourself."

The property itself is amazing. The age of the home makes you just wonder what stories the walls could tell. Finding something like this is a once in a lifetime experience and we were so happy to get that experience.

The house is amazing, is super big and stylish, it preserves the authentic old japanese style and the host is super helpful and attentive.

In cold seasons the house can be very cold, however the host set up heaters in each room, which made our stay comfortable.

We had an excellent stay, the photos of this place do not do it justice it’s incredible staying in this beautiful piece of history. 150-160years old with modern toilets & kitchen and a beautiful wooden bathroom with lovely wooden plunge tub. Checkin was a breeze with the owner who was very lovely and walked us through the entire place with care. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Beautiful, old and really authentic house in amazing mountain area.

It's not suitable in winter. In the apartment, we have a heater that works on kerosene!!!!! , and it smells like a garage. I think it's really unhealthy to sleep there because it burns all our oxygen. Outside these two rooms in toilet and bath, we had a temperature around 1 DEGREE!!!!!!! . It was crazy cold to sleep there. I strongly do not recommend you come to this place when the temperature outside is lower than 10 degrees. I still don't understand how the owner can rent this apartment to TRAVELERS in winter.

"Highly recommend - one of my favourite accommodations."

Wonderful to stay in a traditional old wooden house, but with modern conveniences. Futon was comfortable, fully equiped kitchen, the bathroom had a cedar bath which took a while to fill up - but worth it! Traditional foyer and an irori (open fire place- not in use though!) in "lounge room" were wonderful, as were the wooden stairs to second floor rooms and the high roof. I was a solo traveller, so I didn't use the top floor. I enjoyed my 2 night stay. This is a fabulous place for people wanting to get away from the typical tourist places. The small town is both traditional in areas, and "modern" in others. A Japanese restaurant (not open every day) and a Chinese restaurant are within walking distance, as are 2 convenience stores. It is also walking distance to the station. ( I travelled from Nagoya and then moved on to Matsumoto.) You can easily do day trips to Tsumago, Narai and walk parts of the Nakasendo (as I did) - just check the train time tables in advance! Heating is room specific, so if you're there in winter it can be a bit cold in rarely used rooms - like kitchen or toilet. There are heaters in every room, but as one person - I thought that was a waste of power, so I'd just put my puffer coat on outside the main room I used. I would definitely stay here again if I'm back in the area.
