Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel

The hotel is in a beautiful building and situated in a great location. Our Superior King room was bright and spacious and very comfortable. There is an underground car park located next to the hotel, for a charge, which makes it very convenient. The staff generally were very pleasant. We ate the second night in the Miller & Carter restaurant, in the hotel, and were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the good service.

We only stayed for 2 nights, but on returning to our room on the second afternoon at 3:45, it had not been cleaned. I phoned down to At Your Service 6 times, not getting a response and my husband also tried on an outside line. Eventually at 4:20 I got a response, the lady was apologetic and said someone will be up immediately. The cleaner didn't arrive until 5:30 and when I asked why it hadn't been cleaned, she said that she had been very busy! We thought this was very poor, but in relaying our complaint at checkout, they waived our 2 day parking charge, which was appreciated. We were very disappointed with the breakfast, as expected more from a Marriott Hotel. It was all self-service, but by the time the eggs were brought out, they were cold. My husband loves to have Eggs Royale as a luxury, which was on the In-Room Menu, but not available in their restaurant! The bacon was not very appetising as it was fatty and not crispy -as most hotels serve it now. My final disappointment was when I asked for a cappuccino at breakfast, as did not enjoy their filter coffee, and was told I could have one, but there would be a charge! Even at small boutique hotels and B & B's , I've been offered a choice of coffee in the morning!

Marriott emailed to ask me if I wanted to upgrade. But they did not mention their aircon had been out for a week. The room we were offered was noisy as it had to have permanent air movement (sealed window). We were moved. We heard others complaining about the noisy rooms later. My car was rummaged through after I left it part-locked the first night. This means people are checking all the cars' handles every night, unless I am very unlikely. Good to know. You can walk through the hotel to the car park unchallenged. I asked for CCTV. There was none. The spaces are too tight for a modern car. Mine now has a dent from some clown in a jelly mould clonking it with their door. Don't park anything you treasure. Or are leasing. There were party-goers shouting and crashing around the place until early morning. They spend more money than quiet guests and so are not challenged. The room was a bit tired, but clean. The staff were polite but braced for problems (they had had a week of aircon complaints). I chose the place for convenient, safe parking. I should have abandoned the car in a pub carpark. If you have any veggie leanings, you might find breakfast in a room surrounded by paintings of bulls a bit odd. And the cooking at breakfast was not great. I am trying to be fair, but with the items taken from my car and the damage to the door, it was an expensive stay. There was no General Manager on duty over the weekend (why? nervous breakdown?). The staff were told about my car. Heard nothing. There is a sign telling you Marriott take no responsibility for anything, but it feels like a secure car park when you drive in through the gates. They should make it clear that they have a theft problem. I was told they do patrol it, but that clearly is not working. Final thought: whoever is trying to steal from cars in the basement has complete access to the rest of the building.

Ideal location

NO AIR CONDITIONING WORKING IN ROOM. THE windows let only little air into room and even with a noisy fan blowing all night it was too stuffy to sleep.
