"Wonderful experience"

We spent 10 days at Akumal and spent several hours at grand tequila. We were very impressed with the amazing service at the lobby bar at Tequila. Jorge and Enrique are absolute professionals and made us feel very welcome no matter how busy they were. We definitely recommend this resort and if you are lucky enough to find them working, you will not be disappointed in the service!

Ok, hopefully this review will help you!! I will start with saying that I have been to approximately 35 resorts in Dominican Republic, Cuba, Jamaica and Mexico so I have a lot of experience with all inclusive resorts. This is my second time at this resort. I was there 10 years ago for my friend’s wedding. Needless to say that the rooms are a bit dated because they haven’t been renovated since. We had no major issues with ours other than a leaking shower. My parents’s room had more. The ceiling fan didn’t work, the electric outlet beside the bed didn’t work and maintenance had to come everyday to fix the toilet. Rooms are however very spacious and the mattress was comfortable. The grounds are gorgeous and there are plenty of chairs at the pool. The beach is a bit far (6-7 minutes in a shuttle that comes by every 10 min). We knew the beach was far which wasn’t the issue. The issue is that for the past six months, they have separated the access to the beach. The portion of the hotel that is considered beachfront is the Akumal. Well they have a separate portion of the beach which we can’t have access to since we are at the Coba. The side we can use is so narrow that you can’t even walk around your chair. Their side of the beach is huge, with plenty of chairs. Also, being at Coba, we don’t even have access to any buffet on that side so very inconvenient if you want to spent the whole day at the beach without having to go back to the Coba to eat. You really feel like a second class and it’s very unfortunate. The food was good with a lot of variety each day. I would recommend downloading the Bahia Príncipe app and make reservations to the à la carte restaurant because to ensure you have a spot. We did the Mikado and the Portofino which were both a nice change from the buffet. The highlight for my kids (10 and 12 years old) was the Teens Club where they made some friends. The shows at night were good and very entertaining. Go see Rosa at the buffet where you will get the best treatment. Best waitress ever and she is the sweetest. We had every meal in her section and got the special treatment each time :) - we miss you Rosa! We booked with Air Canada and were very disappointed with the service we got from the two representatives at the hotel. We booked an excursion with them (cenote and zipline) and we dealt the price to 621$ for 7 people. When at the Mayas Aventuras, we started the excursion with the cenote to be told while waiting for the zipline that we had to pay an additional 10 USD per person for transportation. We told him we booked a private tour with our Air Canada representatives and there was never any mention of paying extra for transportation as it was already a private tour. We were told we had to pay otherwise we couldn’t continue the excursion. When we got back to the hotel, we expressed our dissatisfaction with Alex and Osmara. Alex advised it was unpaid taxes (we were told transportation) and that he would have to speak to his manager and to come see him first thing in the morning the next day (December 27). On December 27, we showed up at 9h30 when Osmara told us it was Alex’s day off. Very unprofessional to tell us to come back to see him on his day off. Osmara was aware of the situation because she was there when we booked and said she couldn’t do anything about it, that we had to deal directly with Mayas Aventuras. We explained that the excursion was booked with Air Canada and we shouldn’t be penalized if they made us book an excursion at the wrong price. I feel this matter should have been handled differently and Air Canada should have been responsible for the cost difference. We are told to book with Air Canada for the service, insurance, etc but the service we got was far worse than booking directly with a local company. Lastly, I have to say the people at the front desk are very unprofessional. We were told we had to pay 20USD per person if we wanted to spend the day at the beach and have access to the facilities on their side of the resort. So we decided to treat ourselves and advised them we wanted to have this deal for one day only before my brother would leave (he left 2 days prior to me). We were told it was fine but that we had to return our special bracelet before 23h00 that same day not to be charged extra days (there was 3 days left to our trip), which we did at around 9h45 after the show. The day I was checking out, I was told I had to pay 300USD because they had no proof we had returned our bracelets. I was so pissed. They asked me what was the name of the guy that cut our bracelets because no note was made that we did return them. How is it our responsability to remember the name of the guy and ask for a proof the bracelets were returned. I told them to look at their cameras and they would see we did in fact return the 7 bracelets. We had to fight with them to the point I started crying because I couldn’t believe how bad we were treated and for them to think we were liars. My kids were so upset. If they offer “a day at the other resort” in the middle of your stay, they should be better organized to know when you return your ticket instead of the putting the responsability on you and make you feel like a criminal. This ended the trip on a really bad note and for that reason I will never book at this hotel anymore and will ensure I advise everyone I know not to go there.

В целом, отель большой, красивый и удобный. Все номера в отдельных виллах и впечатление, что живёшь очень уединенно. Много зелени, цветов, бегают разные мелкие животные, всё очень ухоженно, чисто и приятно глазу. Особенно хочется отметить рестораны: большой выбор и абсолютно все блюда очень вкусные! Официанты работают отлично, обслуживают быстро, улыбаются, все вина из бутылок, главный ресторан очень большой и красивый, столы со скатертями и тканевыми салфетками. Мороженое нескольких сортов и шампанское с утра до вечера. Часто живая музыка, ходили туда с удовольствием. Вообще, персонал очень хороший, заботливый и приветливый, убирают качественно, минибар пополняют каждый день. WiFi работает отлично, даже на пляже. Лежаков много, водорослей нет.

Не понравился бар на пляже, он неудобно расположен и работает всего один бармен, поэтому в очереди приходилось стоять по 15-20 минут. В соседнем Акумале несколько баров и никогда не было очередей. Вход в море или с камнями, или без камней, но по колено (справа от пирса). Можно пройти 100 метров вправо к отелю Tequila, там вход без камней и относительно глубоко. Также не понравилось то, что мы бронировали 2 отдельные кровати, но при заселении дали номер с одной двуспальной! После наших претензий пообещали "помочь на следующий день", но не точно. В конце концов, застелили диван в номере и на этом остановились. Это очень плохое обслуживание!!! Люди специально бронируют ОТДЕЛЬНЫЕ кровати и летят через половину земного шара не для того, чтобы ложиться в одну кровать, являясь родственниками, а не супругами! При этом на ресепшене говорят, что "не имеют отношения к тому, что обещает booking.com..". Это как, вообще?!! Booking.com в каждом письме сообщает, что не несёт ответственности за информацию, которую размещает отель... Кому же верить?

"Teen Club Coba"

This is specifically for the "teen club" on the Coba side. We are currently staying at Akumal side (11 nights) but they have no teen club, only a kids club. We travel by trolley everyday because our son really enjoys the teen club at Coba. Gigey is the primary reason he enjoys his time there. She really knows how to keep the older kids busy and having fun. My son looks forward to their afternoon soccer games. Gigey is great!!

"LEFT HIGH AND DRY AT CANCUN AIRPORT"

I am currently staying at the Bahia Principe Grand Coba (December 27-Janury 2nd) and had an absolutely terrible experience upon arrival from Cancun airport to the resort. We landed at the airport in the late evening after a full day of travel with our four-year-old and eight-year-old. Upon leaving the baggage claim we searched for the Amstar representative--that we booked through Bahia Principe--and they were no where to be found. In the end, we waited for more than two hours with two exhausted children, a trolley full of luggage, in the heat only to be told we would need to PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR OUR OWN TAXI TO THE RESORT. At this point in the evening, THERE WERE NO TAXIS. When we finally secured one, at midnight, we PAID $450 CAD for a one-way ride to Bahia Principe Grand Coba. We were assured by the Amstar rep that we would be reimbursed when we arrived at the hotel. THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. THE GRAND COBA STAFF REFUSED TO REIMBURSE US. I spent the better part of my first day at the resort on the phone with Bahia Principe customer service. They told me they would look into it, only to CALL ME THE NEXT DAY AND TELL ME IN HALF-BROKEN ENGLISH THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO AND WOULD NOT BE REIMBURSING ME FOR THE TAXI. DO NOT BOOK SHUTTLE SERVICE WITH AMSTAR OR BAHIA PRINCIPE UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO BE LEFT HIGH AND DRY.
