"Wonderful Experience Connecting with Nature"

10.0

The Hix House website is right, this place is an experience. We had a wonderful two night stay on the heels of four nights at the Wyndham Rio Grande on the main island. Being a pale Midwesterner, I came to Vieques with a bit of a burn and 68 mosquito bites on my legs alone despite using repellent and sunscreen in Rio Grande. The open air design of Hix House had me fretful about more bites combined with the 90 degree temperatures. I'm so glad we couldn't cancel our reservation. Hix was amazing. It is a place of peace and respite. It has a calm, peaceful energy that had us talking in whispers. The architecture is thoughtful and accommodates a soft breeze when you open all the doors and clever windows. We were on the bottom of Triangular - Loft Adobe - with a constant breeze outside on the patio lounge chairs - the perfect place to read and catch glimpses of Emeralds popping in and out of the tree above us. The island horses visited daily and we had an iguana stop by our first morning after we had a dip in the oh-so-relaxing pool with an amazing view. The mosquito repellant provided was a nice touch. The first night my bite phobia was so bad, we kept all the windows and doors shut. That was a mistake, it is not how the space was designed to function. It gets too hot and made for a rough night sleeping. The second night we left everything open, used a light spritz of repellant and carefully crisscrossed the netting around the bed. With the fans on we slept peacefully and had no issues with mosquitoes. Listening to all of the night sounds of the island was wonderful. So many different birds, fogs and insect calls through the night and early morning made for a restful symphony of sorts. I wish we could have stayed longer. The coffee provided with creamer, butter, eggs, fruit, juice, little delicious muffins and bread for toast was delightful and we enjoyed breakfast each morning with the birds outside. The beach towels provided were wonderful for trips out to the beaches. We rented a car from Vieques car Rental and easily accessed Playa Negra for a walk and Sea Glass Beach on our first evening on the island with a stop at Duffy's for a veggie burger and sweet plantains (with quite yummy sauce). Storms and the start of hurricane season left large deposits of sea grass on Playa Negra, Chiva, Pata Prieta and other beaches which made for bit of a stinky experience, but we found a decent spot at Chiva for a few hours and wish we had tried Caracas earlier as low tide made for a clearer beach and the sand there was lovely. If you like to climb around rocks and explore, check out Punta Conejo to find fossilized coral and a stunning view. Mosquito Pier offered an incredible snorkeling experience. The nature reserve is a beautiful drive with lots of places to explore. Be mindful of the horses on all roads and drive slowly and carefully to protect them. They will lay down right up to and over the roads that, at times, are a very tight squeeze for two cars. Note that Hix does not permit use of hair dryers or styling tools - you won't need them, and you wash your own dishes - as you should. The staff is kind and welcoming, offering starfruit from the trees and suggestions if you ask, and didn't mind that we spoke little Spanish. Hix House complimented our desire to connect with nature and restore ourselves. I hope to return soon.

Loved how you feel in this property is serene romantic and beautiful. You can never get tired of the view solaris. Carmen really welcoming and accommodating soon I will be back. Only thing I recommend is better pedestal fans and take more care of the pool and of the poop of horses.

My husband and I stayed for four nights in May during our honeymoon. We loved it! We loved the open air concept and overall stayed pretty cool with the provided fans. We didn't really use the mosquito net over the bed, as the breeze kept them away on all but one night. I do think that staying on a higher level floor probably helps with the increased breeze and decreased insects. The staff brought us new eggs, juice, and bread all but one of the days. The pool was very nice, and although it did have some leaves in it from all the beautiful trees that surround the property, it didn't bother us at all. We'd definitely stay again!

This place is stunning โ€” from the minimalist architecture to the nature in the property (horses anyone?!) and makes it a very unique stay for design lovers. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene and the staff very helpful.

"Bugs everywhere "

8.0

The architecture and location are beautiful and we were pleasantly surprised to get a free room upgrade upon arrival. But the open air concept means youโ€™re basically camping/glamping so for the price itโ€™s not worth it. No AC. There are bugs everywhere all the timeโ€”in the pool, in the rooms, in your bed. The net around your bed isnโ€™t just for romance. Housecleaners didnโ€™t provide soap in the bathroom. Iโ€™m 80% sure I got bit by bedbugs. Service is overall friendly and responsive but unless you find sleeping outside comfortable, I recommend elsewhere.

Very unique property - limited frills (no AC, no TV, etc), but secluded, quiet, beautiful mountain breezes, fantastic retreat, great views. Really loved it.

The Hix Island House is a unique and tranquil experience up and away from the hustle and bustle of town. Designed to be an off-grid, unplugged experience, and staffed by cheerful and helpful folks, I would absolutely stay there again.
